I did the best I could, I was maximally engaged, I love my job. In the end, I asked my manager what I could do to get a promotion. His answer was rather vague, as if he himself did not know what to say to me, but he emphasized that "I shouldn't worry because it will surely happen". I was never promoted. My conclusion is that the only thing I did wrong was that I never wanted to become a brown noser?

A promotion comes with more money and we all know how generous this company is with dispersing money to the lower echelons (Sarcasm loading)
if you're in asset servicing tech, being a verbal bully is a good way to move up
I think some managers here are groomed to be master manipulators.
Or you didn't put your resume together soon enough.
