Being boss’s favorite

There are many benefits to being a manager's favorite, but there must be some downsides too, right? It sometimes seems to me that this is not too good for one's career, no matter how strange it may sound. I know a person who left here only because he could not stand the obvious favoritism but whose career has progressed much more during this time than the career of our manager's favorite (who is mostly only successful in feeding his ego).

Right, @1rlu. And all those battered wives are just quitters for leaving their husbands

What really sucks is being the team superstar, if your team has a bunch of underachievers. You know, the kind of people who tell the superstar, "you need to stop doing this, that, and the other, or at least stop doing it so quickly... because you're making us look bad."
Those kind of people? Those are always the ones accusing the boss of playing favorites. Instead of realizing that the boss is only recognizing and praising outstanding work.

Some times a manager needs a right hand person or a back up.
When the manager starts to have favorites or treat some team members like superstars, then morale changes. Too much of this takes place now. Some managers and superstars are pompous and verbally abuse teammates.
People look for other jobs because of incompetent managers.
I am a believer that a person should get extensive and required management skill training before being a manager of people.
