Jacksonville’s Ridiculous LED Lights!

I have migraines due to light sensitivity. Have had minimal migraines over the past 2 years.. but I’m dreading going back to the office after Friday when those ridiculously bright LED lights that shine right in our peripheral vision as we look at monitors triggered the worst migraine I’ve ever experienced.

I tried to request a filter just before the pandemic, but they gave me an 18page document to have my doctor fill out - super unreasonable- like, I’m supposed to pay to go to the doctor (when I don’t have a migraine), ask him to fill out this stupid 18 page form?! Give me a break.

If they want to follow the “code”, then they have a few other boxes to check.. maybe look at how the cubes face, the cr---y corner desks that we can’t get our chairs under, etc etc.

I have a 75 minute commute to work each way, and 3 kids to get to school and then get home to.. and I have to save my PTO for when they’re sick, so sorry I don’t have time to go to the doctor just because they can’t treat me like an adult and believe me when I say that their ridiculous lighting is actually blinding me and causing migraines (again). So frustrating- and I’m scared to sit at that desk again tomorrow.

Couple hours of PTO to get a doctor’s note to WFH? Save hours and hours on a daily commute? No brainer…

To OP

Bottom line is you have to put your health first. Doing the job of four people is not what you were hired for, if your dept falls apart because you miss one day to get your personal matters taken care of then that should be a wake-up call for them to hire more people.

This is a corporation whose sole purpose is to make money and more of it, each year. They will never say “hey Ms worker, it seems these lights give you migraines, please get a medical accommodation to wfh” they would rather chew you up until you have nothing left to give.

If you can’t go to a neurologist then go to your GP, any doctor can write you that note. So can your therapist, your podiatrist, your physical therapist, your chiropractor basically any health care provider.

What you shouldn’t do, is just do nothing. You will end up getting worse migraines with more frequency and then will have to miss multiple days of work. It may take time to get a Dr to write the note for you, but you have to do it.

No shame in wanting to WFH. Lots of valid reasons why it’s beneficial to both the company and the employee. But agree there is no reason to exaggerate. Although I do have a slight headache after reading this thread. Seriously, though, if anyone here needs medical help… please go. Nothing is more important than your health. For as unhappy we all are about RTO, I will admit that the PTO here is very good.

These are the same people that complains about smell of spicy food in the kitchen, smelling cologne and body odors in the hallway or elevators, untidy bathrooms, but don't complain these same things when they are in Starbucks, Walmart, Target, that bougee gastropub or brewery, where they most likely spend their time during WFH.

It’s shady when people exaggerate about how hard they work. Doing the work of four FT employees means that you’re working 32 hours a day. And if you have time to browse this forum and post, then you obviously have free time on your hands.

OR.. I’m not willing to take PTO because I’m so damn busy (doing the job of 4 people since everyone on the team found WFH jobs at other companies)… so I would pay dearly if I take time off right now. I am still trying to catch up from having to log off early on Friday and lay down in a conference room until I was able to drive home due to a migraine. And it must be nice to take time for yourself.. single mom of 3 kids so I struggle to find time for myself - been trying for 3 weeks and just can’t. It’s not as cut & dry as some might think.. some people actually can’t get to the doc to fill out a form. Maybe the company should just not make it so difficult for the only damn person showing up to the office to get the lights dimmed a notch.
Also, I don’t have a bank medical plan, so I would have to see a general practitioner before being referred to a neurologist… and then there’s the cost of testing.

Search “medical accommodations” on flagscape. From there you’ll enter in your info and you can download the forms for your dr to fill out. I think it’s only three pages. You can request to WFH for up to a year. It’s easy and if you have chronic migraines it’s a no brainer.

Use the PTO to get your medical exemption. The doctor will fill it out no problem. You then can be home when your kids are sick and can save money on gas. Do it, you will be much happier. I did.

I have a family member with this. Not to alarm you, but would recommend you to see an eye doctor who can check the health of your retina and perform an OCT scan.

Same thing! I got a blue light screen protector for my work monitors and it helps SOOO much! I also got blue light glasses to wear outside work, and I have definitely noticed less migraines. I have terrible light sensitivity to the sun, but also to my computer. They aren’t too expensive, but with a doctors note I bet they can order you a screen, or you can expense your glasses. If you don’t have time to go see a doctor, I think the insurance used to (and maybe still does) cover board-certified doctors through telephone, computer, and remote visits.

If you have a medical issue, but aren’t willing to take 2 hours of PTO to go to the doctor, then you probably don’t need a medical accommodation. Medical specialists can diagnose you, even if you aren’t having migraine symptoms at the time of your visit. It’s what they went to medical school for. Go to a neurologist (not a general practitioner).

My doctor wrote me a note in 30 seconds after I got my test results back. Good luck!

Get a medical accommodation to work from home, very easy process. Your doctors will just have to fill out a form.
