Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

NYC to Charlotte

Anyone got transferred or was relocated from NYC office to Charlotte? What was the major difference between the two? Better? Worse? Was it worth it?

Not a huge sample, but the 5 people I know who moved from NYC to CLT all returned to NY within 1-2 years - on their own dime or at a different company at lower comp. Except one who was in Syndicated Loans. He went to another bank back in NY and did very well out of it.

Either way, they will find a way to scre% you.

I wouldn't want to get dumped someplace I didn't already want to live. Don't let them own you and pick where you live. Go where YOU will be happy.

Don't move for this company. And not to Charlotte. (no idea where you are career-wise, but adds nothing to your resume. If anything, a blemish.)

Ask if you can take an expenses-paid trip for a couple weeks (or take your family for a trip) there to see how it might be. (Even if you've been on business trips there, you'd look at it differently now.) Fwiw, which neighborhood "matters". Commute is hellacious.

Then, stall..... ask if you can try it on a temporary basis in a company rental house or apt, then stall.... try to hold out for a management change and hope they'll forget or move on to other concerns. (that's worked for many of my teammates!)

Your paycheck will go further there, but personally, I wouldn't do it. It's a company town. As another poster said, very limited career wise. (unless you are close to retirement and looking to settle in the Carolinas) School system sounds a mess.

There are nice parts of NC. Charlotte is not one of them.

When the Bank tells you to 'relocate or resign', be prepared for the worst if you decide to move. There are no guarantees once you arrive. The Bank has been known in the past to eliminate jobs shortly after you've made the huge effort to relocate - at your own expense. Horrible but true.

NYC associates who get RIFd always seem to find another job almost immediately. Jobs in CLT are not as plentiful. This is especially true when there's a downturn and the Big Banks aren't hiring.

I've been offered either to relocate to Charlotte or be RIFd.

I have a co-worker that moved to Charlotte and does not even have a work station.

NYC is a dumpster fire. Charlotte is well-manicured and clean.
