Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Prospective Employee: Thoughts on Charlotte

As the title says, have two job offers one for BOA in Charlotte and the other from another smaller bank closer to my hometown.

What are your thoughts on Charlotte? How is the commute? Is it a good career move? Are there other finance jobs besides banking? How’s the nightlife scene for a late 20s?

Don’t do it. But if you are African American you are in. Because it’s all about being diverse. Right?? Wink wink.

You'll fit in if you're a finance bro. Charlotte is full of these Patagonia vest wearing self-entitled, arrogant, narcissistic masters of the universes. PLUS, there's a lot of sorority hangers-on to pick for your wanton needs.

It's a good family town, good place to raise kids. Good cycling scene and a variety of foods. Not too far from mountains or beaches. The airport can be tedious and busy but you can get anywhere and it's a quick flight to good international beaches.

Like @qth+1i9D6Wsm said, this company is trash. Trash raises and bonuses, if you even get one, trash promotions, they will only promote people they like, total buddy buddy system. If you ask what is required for promotions they'll show you bs requirements which they just blatantly ignored to promote something they know and like.

If you're absolutely determined to work here, it is better to be in Charlotte than to be in any other location. All decision-making happens there, and if you get noticed, probably better chances of promotion. But know the negatives: highly bureaucratic, identity politics, weak operational controls, constant manager turnover, unintelligible changes, toxic corporate culture, poor industry reputation. The bank puts the thumbscrew to its employees and clients because it is all about stock price and the big pay day for senior execs. So yes, go ahead and join the madhouse if you are so inclined.

If you like the offer they are giving you, and you think you’ll be promoted or make so much more every year. Consider this, you will get 2% raises each year- if you are lucky, and minuscule bonuses each year - not even guaranteed- but a guaranteed increase in insurance premiums which will set you back negative each year after their “generous 2%” raise. So if you want to be making less 40 years from now than your job offer from this bank today, then by all means, make that choice. I wish I knew that many years ago. I’m just thankful that I’ve moved on.

Agree with poster about Southend. Other major employers are Lowes, Duke Energy, Honeywell, TIAA

BAC is a solid employer, but a bureaucratic highly regulated bank with lots of politics, know that going in, but really solid to have on resume.

There is not set of circumstances in which I would ever recommend working at Wells Fargo. Saying it is a dumpster fire is charitable.

Charlotte is a nice city. Lots of opportunities for people in finance and tech. Check out Southend for a place to live. It’s paradise for a 20 something. Lots of bars and restaurants and it’s a short commute via the light rail to uptown.

BOA is a trash company. Stay away as far as possible. This company only promotes people they like despite their incompetence or lack of leadership skills. DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!!!!

Don't do it!! Horrible commute. Horrible quality of life. Dead end career-wise. A deep Black Ho-e you will never crawl out of. Unless you opt to go work for Wells.

It's a company town and the two banks are the factories. But no union.
