Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Are couteroffers still a thing?

You know, when you find another job outside but you tell your manager and they can offer more money for you to stay? Is that still a thing here?

I put in my two weeks two weeks ago . They tried to keep me but couldn’t match what i was making at my new job. I make 30k more than I did at BNY and I’m doing less work and have less stress . Best thing I ever did was apply outside the company

They counter offered me in late 2021. I declined and left for another company. I left for the other company.

This must depend on the dept. In ours, when crucial SMEs receive offers elswhere, there is not even an exit interview to understand why they are leaving and certainly no counteroffer.

Yes, but it’s not a guarantee and you need a signed offer letter from somewhere else for any sort of match or counter-offer

They countered my external offer in July 2022. I declined, joined a new company. Best decision any human can make - leaving BNY

They will probably always be a thing.

It’s amazing: companies are content to give their top performers stingy raises year after year, but when they are ready to bolt, it’s amazing how quickly they find an extra 30% to counter.

As a previous poster indicated, there are risks (but not in every case). Yup, they may hold the line on your salary. And they may believe that you’re not truly committed (as though everyone shouldn’t be looking to maximize their earnings potential) so choose you to lay off.

However, I’ve seen some people make out okay.

But you should consider the reasons that got you looking in the first place. I knew a guy (different bank) who had been treated shabbily by his manager, who countered while promising to leave him alone and make everything nice. As soon as he turned down the outside offer, things went back to how they’d always been. He was getting more money but eventually had to leave for his sanity.

they will do this often in india because it's toughest to backfill in that location. we offer counter, they decline and end up leaving anyway.

Why would you ever entertain that? At best you can get a match and then enjoy your 0% raise the next several review cycles; they will absolutely get you back "in range” via lackluster raises and bonuses. At worst you'll have a target on your back for the next layoff. Just leave and if the grass isn't greener then boomerang back for an even bigger payday.

Probably not. Maybe they were offering counters a year ago, but market conditions are different now. You could try, but be prepared for a "no" and to actually take the other offer and leave BNYM.
