Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

There are still many very talented people here

That is very surprising, considering that most people with such skills can find a much higher paying job. The stress and pressure certainly cannot be greater than here. I doubt that is possible. Of course BNY Mellon will not change anything as long as people are willing to do a bunch of work that should be done by two people or more.

Wow. BNYM was the worst run large bank that I’ve experienced. Gotta assume that you worked at the top of the house.

@1wee+1

In my experience 3,000 hour years are the minimum here. If you’re mailing it in as you indicate then my hat is off to you. Care to share role?

BNY is most definitely not the most stressful place to work. Part of the benefit of this place for many is the generally relaxed working hours and relaxed levels of stress compared to other types of finance or banking jobs. I leave the office by 7 PM each night and only have occasional work to complete when I get home. I have investment banking and PE friends who are excited when they’re home before 10 and can get one of their two weekend days with less than 4 hours of additional work. They don’t have time for their families and relationships and regardless of prior good performance, if they fail to bring in new deals the following quarter, their bonus is scuttled or they’re potentially fired. The stress and pressure on them is intense, but they’re paid very well for that pressure. Part of why I work here and accept a relatively lower salary is that I can be home at 7:30 and see my wife and kids. If I need to work when I get home, I can do it at 11 after they’re asleep - I don’t owe a client an urgent term sheet at 8 PM. My bonus isn’t completely destroyed and I don’t get fired if we have a relatively light quarter. I don’t need to put up with the depraved, ki-l or be ki---d culture at many other types of financial firms. This is hardly the most stressful place to work and many of us know and appreciate that.

We have lost lots of people. We have employees with many years of service that self-identify as having “green” (Mellon) or “maroon” (BNY) blood that hang in there due to a love of the company or a fear of the unknown (or maybe both). We have also lived through 6 CEO’s in 14 years and people think the “new one” will make it better for the employees.

IMHO, RV is not that guy.

It is time to move On. It IS going to get worse before it gets better. My time is now.

I’ve worked in much more intense environments, and with less pay as well. BNYM is about standard for large corporations. If it was so bad people would be leaving in droves. it’s never been a better time to job hunt but I see few leaving.

I know that I’m waiting it out to get a package. If it’s not here for Christmas I’ll pull the plug in January.

There are, but I think a lot of the older ones are waiting it out until they get a package.
