Layoffs used to happen after Thanksgiving. Does anybody know what’s happening this year?

Yes, layoffs have been in progress - the usual "here and there" kind that keeps BNY out of the news. But they are occurring nevertheless. I've heard of larger scale ones coming in early 2023, but nothing concrete. Personally, I do expect it.
Do we know what grades will be effected?
They have been happening for the past several months with a huge one set for January
I have seen a few MD’s not old enough to retire announce their sudden “retirement”. I can only hope when I am ready for retirement I get sent away with an additional year of pay plus unemployment pay.
