Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

LinkedIn

If you're not in management, is having a LinkedIn profile even useful? I don’t have any social media, but now I’m starting to wonder if my refusal to create a LinkedIn account is hindering my future prospects in some way. I often see it mentioned in advice on what to do when laid off, and it’s making me second-guess my stance on it.

"Our second-annual BNY “recharge” period is underway. I'm missing the free Starbucks at our global HQ, but it’s worth it to be able to spend more time with my family, all home together, while taking a break from the more routine work to really focus on what matters for clients and driving our company forward these next two weeks."

His family would probably prefer that he was in the office with his "free" coffee.

I just keep getting spammed from linkedin even though I've unsubscribed a couple times. At least it goes to my junk folder now.

LinkedIn is a platform where people spout more sh!t than the morning after a curry and Guinness session.
"Myself and my family went on holidays. What did I learn about this and how can I apply it to business".
As for BNY in general on LinkedIn saying how fantastic they are and how employees come first. Give me a break.
And the big bosses status about missing the office. Seriously?

Linkedin is a joke and all it is, is a poor social media app. It does not advance your career only you and your experience do.

And speaking of Jokes… look who is back? The 42 or is it 43 P.U. @c4+1jh2531cx

I agree, recruiters do use it. I am not in the market to be recruited, I am in the sunset of my tech career. I monitor the job boards all the time just to keep a pulse of whats going on and there are 10-15 jobs I could apply for and get, if I wanted to.

What do I do? After 40 years in the industry, I am whats considered a Wizard of the Dark Arts. The current job I'm at...interviewed on Monday, offer on Tuesday, started the following week. Why did I change jobs? They closed down our office, otherwise I would still be with them.

Recruiters target passive candidates at all levels by searching LinkedIn. If you don't use LinkedIn or if your profile isn't up to date you might be missing out on certain opportunities.

I was an early adopter of LinkedIn, first year it was actually online. I removed myself from it years ago, as the other poster says...its just another social media platform. It used to tout itself as the platform for professionals, but anyone can get an account. I keep in touch with 2 or 3 people from the past 40 years of work, via email, text...or...no...a phone call? Not that...tell me....like talking to someone on the PHONE?? Yes...

Anyone remember the original social media? Usenet? Text only, with thousands of topics. That was actually useful and interesting. Social media is destroying the fabric of life. No guardrails. Misinformation propagating within hours. Now there is nothing wrong with giving an opinion, as long as you make it clear its an opinion and not some fact you are making up. But people are stupid, always have been, always will be. Make smart decisions, verify things before you repeat. We are all just mean girls now.

It’s a good tool to keep up with old colleagues and have a way to stay in contact, but for the most part it’s a big circlej--kthat isn’t worth staying on for. I update mine every so often especially if I’m looking for a new job but that’s usually about it. It’s more so outside people can see my stuff.
