Annual Review/Bonus/Merit

Question regarding the annual bonus.
I was hired at the end of 2023 as a Letter G (hourly, non-salaried role, eligible for overtime), and my offer letter mentioned that I qualify for an annual bonus, typically around 10% of my pay.

During the 2023 annual review (held in 2024), I was informed that I didn’t qualify for the bonus due to my limited time in the position, which I understand. However, I did receive 1,000 reward points.

For 2024, I expected to receive my bonus in January, but I am concerned as my manager has not scheduled a meeting for my annual review, bonus, or merit increase. Despite emailing them several times, I have not received a response.

I’m also a bit confused because I’ve been told that Letter G positions typically do not receive an annual bonus, yet my offer letter clearly states that I do qualify.

Can please clarify this for me?

Investment Management and Wealth Management get bonuses regardless of grade level. The rest of the folks are not bonus eligible unless they are Grade J or higher.

Probably depends on what area you are in because none of my G level employees get a bonus but our business partners do and we are the ones giving them answers daily.

Your manager not responding to an email from you - one of many examples of the BNY management team. No spine.

@ch+1jhbv6gcc Yes I’m in asset servicing. The letter grades and titles you mention just came to be over the last year or two. It’s been changed many times over the last 20 years. When I was an H, which was equivalent to a supervisor, we did not get OT because we were considered management and were in charge of hiring and firing for the team. I think it was technically HH grade if I remember right. Double letters meant no OT. Once they moved all the staff out and to India, we became individual contributors so we were now OT eligible.

I assume you are not in Asset Servicing. Your team has different levels than my team.

G is Associate I. (OT)
H is Associate II. (OT)
I is Senior Associate. (Non-OT)
J is Vice President I
K is Vice President II

This all should have been discussed before accepting the job. You were low balled and now it's too late.

Back when we had G’s (senior staff) in my group they were not bonus eligible unless they got a reward for a special project. H’s (supervisor) were bonus eligible but also were not given a bonus. G’s got OT. H’s did not get OT. After they sent all the staff work to India H’s were OT eligible but still no bonus. H’s in other groups got a bonus though. They claimed the bonus budget was too small in my group. So make sure you’re always putting in your OT. And the bonus I do get now definitely isn’t 10%. Maybe 1-2%.

So is it very common for job grade level G to not receive an annual bonus or is it a case by case scenario?

Levels who are eligible for overtime do not receive a bonus. But if your offer letter states it, I would definitely fight for it.

Nobody knows their bonus number yet. I'm a J, but was a G many years ago. I don't remember if I got a bonus at that level, but if I did, it certainly wasn't 10%. I'm in Asset Servicing, so maybe it's different for other departments.
