Am dispensable newbie, just got asked to create a document outlining all my past work, probably to train whoever takes up my responsibilities once The Great Firing™ happens. I know if it came to the chopping block I'd be one of the first ones to get chopped. Nice knowing you fellas o7

I was asked a. Few months ago as well. There are 5 people in my team that do the similar work. I already know who they might cut. It won’t be me.
I surf the internet and eat donuts everyday.
I agree with the poster below, it has become pretty common practice usually every 3-5 years.
Whoa - hold your horses. B3 here - our entire team (and sister teams) have been asked to do this in various iterations - at least 3 separate times over the past 15 years. (oddly at 5 yrs intervals, so we're kinda due to repeat).
As @ad+1jkh8g3xe indicates, this is most likely an OpEx exercise to review responsibilities, process work flows and work loads by role.
Our team actually came out with some very nice process improvements and redistribution of workloads in the last round.
OpEx is not always about cuts. Hang in there, you may be pleasantly surprised.
(and if not, you can always bail. You decide your future, not "them".)
Really depends on what you do. Could be an opex to find duplication to use your tools elsewhere or eliminate your position all together.
what area are you in?
