Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

layoff.

after 12 years of dedication you’ve been told your position has been eliminated and you are leaving on good standards with BNY. OK BNY, can you tell me what’s supposed to happen now?

For the first few weeks, I felt terrible—easily six weeks of feeling depressed. I even took a vacation to clear my head, wondering how I could be treated like this after all these years. Fortunately, the employment counseling paid for by the bank offered some wisdom. The counselor coached us on how to handle the inevitable interview question: "Why didn't the company retain you?" The answer was simple yet powerful: "The business changed. It wasn't about my skill set or performance, but rather a shift in the business model." This perspective helped remove the self-doubt that the layoff had caused in me.

Eventually, I landed a job as a consultant and later converted to a full-time employee. Although there were compromises, like increased travel, once the firm recognized my capabilities, they allowed me to work remotely 100%. Occasionally, I travel to the West Coast at the firm's expense to meet the team, but my confidence has been restored.

It's important to remember that it’s not you, and it’s not your skill set. There’s simply a mismatch. Instead of feeling insulted, as I initially did, moving forward is the most helpful course of action

I’ve been living my best life since I was let go last year. My advice is to get your ducks in a row and figure out how long you can milk this. Apply for state unemployment as soon as you can. Bank as much as you can and don’t blow your severance payment unless it’s to pay off a debt that is hanging over you. Then take time to regroup. 12 years is a long time in one place and a huge adjustment to not have the job to do every day. I still wake up some days and feel like I have to go to work. I do miss the job and the people I was working with when I was let go but the bank was and is going through organizational changes that are baffling. The area I worked with in LM has changed totally and the management has merged with other management that have not great practices (I used to work for the same people and it was rough). You will bounce back.

The faster you remove this place from your mind, the better your mental health will be!

You relax and take the package.

Then start a leisurely job hunt.

Take some time to determine your ideal job, and go for it.
