I wouldn’t mind it if we were done at 5PM and could just clock out at that time. For the most part my group isn’t don’t till closer to 7PM and that could change at a moments notice if the system has a melt down or a vendor.

Not it is not ‘unfortunate’.
Yes it is the managers fault for commending and condoning such behavior. It is also the managements fault for doing nothing about it. And if you drill deeper you will find that it is the managers poor control of workload and timelines that was and is responsible for this off hour private time intrusion behavior. Agree with all else you posted.
It's surprising this even needs to be addressed. In our technology team, we adhered to a simple yet effective principle—no one was to be disturbed after office hours. Employees had the flexibility to define their own office hours based on their roles. For instance, those collaborating with teams in Chennai or Pune would finish their day earlier. Similarly, individuals handling early SOD (Start of Day) tasks would wrap up early, while late starters stayed later (never exceeding 8 hours).
Yes, everyone carried their laptops, but unless it was truly urgent, no one was contacted outside their designated working hours. Personal time was respected—private time was private time.
However, challenges arose from those who were overly eager to impress or advance their careers, often ignoring the established boundaries by overworking. Ironically, these same individuals would later complain about putting in "extra hours" without recognition.

The issue wasn't with the expectations—it was a matter of perception and understanding. Unfortunately, the blame for such behavior often fell on the managers. As someone who experienced this firsthand, I eventually chose to step away from a management role and became an individual contributor out of frustration with these dynamics.
I'll happily spend 8 hours in the office in exchange I get to log off my computer and leave in the office so I dont work nights and weekends.

in UK we can cut it to 6 hours and be done when need to be in the office.
Ensure you do your full colloboration coffee breaks and stop for lunch
I 100% agree… Work here eight hours and be done. BUT I see a lot of people saying they’re going to do that and still working nights and weekends. Until we change, nothing will change for our betterment
Whatever happened to "flexibility "?? Peakon always asks how we feel about the flexibility at BNY. Well, soon there will be none because we are being treated like children and not adults. So when will punching time cards come back?
I'm game for going dark after 8 hours.
They had better be careful what they wish for. This requirement is going to decrease productivity for many. I’d be happy to reduce my working hours to 8 per day. After 8 hours I’ll go dark. The people that are abusing the policy now will continue to find ways to goof off and take advantage.

What location? Was it a formal email or one from your manager
