Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Meeting I was in.

I was in a meeting and told the remote people will be let go in May and everybody has to report to staff in the same location they are in so they’re going to be redoing the org charts so to speak so you’re reporting to somebody at your same location

Anybody else hear about this or have a meeting where you were told this?

Going back to the 80s

Next we wiI’ll be wearing suits and ties to sit in a cubicle taking inner- web calls/ meetings.

It seems they are trying anything to get people out without paying severance.

  1. Offshoring, and this can also affect people outside the US as labor costs change.
  2. RTO with draconian enforcement tactics.
  3. RTO to locations that are rumored to be closing next year, at which point the job you've been doing remotely for many years will suddenly require a move to some distant location within 30 days, which means most people will just quit.
  4. Forced rankings, giving people 'below expectations' ratings for some non-measurable reason. Then, put those people on PIPs, allowing you to terminate them within 30-60 days with minimal severance pay.

Did I miss anything?

I'm updating my resume and will be sending it to recruiters when they send me job leads. I'm not actively looking yet, but if the right opportunity comes along (local or fully remote) I'll have a hard time saying no.

Why, then, should a manager insist on employees being physically chained to a desk with a headset to get their work done?

Simple. It is an excuse used to get rid of people who fall short. Collaboration, in office person values are a total canard. A lie. The whole RTO in office coming up on 4 days a week now, is just a means to make it more intolerable and force people to leave and make it look like their own decision or fault. This bank survived 9/11, natural disasters, a global pandemic, countless winter storms, mass transit / railroad issues & strikes. People worked remotely and all was well with the world. This edict is simply an obvious means to impact anyone who may need extra time or has extenuating circumstances. Illegal deportation analogy? Hahahahahahha.. LOL. This is more like Napoleon’s Grand Army retreat from Moscow or the trail of tears. It is a complete disaster with good people who belong, being wiped out unnecessarily due to bad planning. Bad planning that quite frankly, is deliberate. People keep hoping there is something better ahead and this will end. Will it? This has lasting impacts on all of us and creates feelings of doom, fear, mistrust and ‘who is the next person to drop?’. It’s an unhealthy place and it’s reached a point where it won’t end as long as this management is here and getting results for investors unethically or not.

I’ve never understood the “bodies-on-desk” policy. We’re not Starbucks, where managing counters is crucial to keeping sales flowing—not everyone can prepare their own latte, after all.
We operate in a technology-driven, highly connected world. Whether someone answers a call from their desk, the bathroom, or a beach hardly matters as long as the client is served effectively. And even this applies primarily to individuals with direct client contacts.
For back-office teams, remote work is entirely feasible. With tools like Microsoft Teams and always-connected devices (or "leashes," as some call them), the necessity of being physically present in the office seems questionable.
The notion of slacking off is a separate issue, and it happens in-office as well. You’ll find pantry conversations, coffee runs, extended lunch breaks, and in-building socializing—all of which eat into productive hours. Chatting about politics, sports, or cultural events occurs more frequently in the office setting than it does remotely.
Moreover, mobile phones aren’t surrendered at the door, so activities like scrolling through Instagram, messaging, or shopping remain rampant at work. There's no practical way to eliminate these distractions—jamming wireless signals isn’t an option since authentication systems depend on them.
Why, then, should a manager insist on employees being physically chained to a desk with a headset to get their work done? Even Robin could see the flaw in that logic.
Ironically, by trying to weed out a few abusers of remote work, companies end up losing hours of “extra” productivity that remote workers were offering—whether they were completing tasks while watching Netflix, taking a break, or enjoying a day at the beach.
It defies common sense

It’s reminiscent of the Trump-driven immigration policies targeting illegal aliens . These measures created widespread panic and stress among millions who entered the country legally, with proper documentation. While they may have impacted a fraction of those here illegally, the illegals often found ways to evade consequences—leveraging courts, legal loopholes. The real victims of such policies were those seeking to enter the country for legitimate reasons—business, higher education, work, or tourism.

Similarly, the rigid “bodies-on-desk” approach penalizes those who are productive and committed, while failing to address the root of inefficiencies. Here one can notice that strategies like EEC or class action lawsuits are being discussed

When everything is counted, the Bank is the loser as they really "lose" those extra hours a person contributed while working remotely.

100% agree but many of the undesired results are self-inflicted like those who think they're smart enough to fool their manager who is located in another timezone then constantly leave the office not long after lunch time while "appearing online" via Teams mobile then wonder why they're being terminated. Can't blame the bank for that one guys, that's on you.

I hope this is true. I'd be very happy to have a local manager. Constantly sc--wed over by US managers. They don't understand European labour laws and will always pick the person they never have to see face to face for bad ratings and redundancy and promote the people in same office as them.

You'll be a horse after your manager tells you what disciplinary action they're imposing on you for abusing the RTO requirements - then all your colleagues will ask "why the long face?"

And FYI, the coffee here causes loose stools.

It's clear who the coffee-badgers are here. Watch when you get a people manager assigned to you, keep trying your constant late arrivals and early departures and other shenanigans and see what happens... Your people manager will be held accountable for kerbing your stupidity and will be required to raise this with your actual work manager. Guess what will happen come your performance review if not sooner? Think I'm talking bull? I dare you to carry on your actions.

You are a mo--n and a butt badger.
The reason they are doing this is to eliminate more positions in big feld swoops. But you would’nt know that because you don’t work here.

We can all thank the coffee-badgers and those gaming the system for the manager change. Your shenanigans got noticed by senior management and EC members.

Our manager is in India, and we were just told that anyone based here in the US will now be reporting to the last remaining US manager in our group.

We work on a system that's being rewritten in India, and I hope to be retired before it goes live (or maybe "escapes" would be a better term).

If staff reports to a local manager in the same location, all of treasury services would become remote then?????

Oh, it is both HR and Legal. Probably some sr. Miscreants in client services too. You can bet money on that. We have all seen a few posts with client firm names taken down. And some of the emails HR sends about ‘disclosure on the internet’. It’s aimed at this forum. If they were professionals and creating a good working environment, we wouldn’t need to post here. T.F.B. On that

Confirmed - I had a conversation that said I would be "assigned" a "manager" in my office even though officially my manager is in another location. My new manager will have no clue what I do so it will be very helpful.

Hey BNY HR, when you read this thread, may’be you can put out some Q&A or frequently asked questions. Please make it plain who is at risk with this new trimming.
In other words- do your job.
