Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

WFH

I used to be based out of KOP. I've been WFH for 5 years and was told today that we're moving to in the office and my choices are Jersey City, Pittsburgh and Lake Mary. I don't live anywhere near those places. Are they going to lay us off? Fire us? Deny unemployment stating that we quit? Try to make us quit so they don't have to pay.

Why should we do more than the bare minimum at this point?

I know somebody that was willing to relocate and asked for a guarantee that they would have their job for a certain amount of time and the dump would not do that.

How could anybody pick up and move their family given the current environment where layoffs are happening at a record pace.

I can confirm. Not reporting to an office will be seen as voluntary dismissal. And there will be no severance offered. Was able to see the FAQ sheet given to managers for RTO.

That's what I've been told by a few managers - current lease runs out end of '26 with an option to extend until end of '27.

As for putting money into the building, have you seen the offices on the 4th floor? They look like someone hosted a frat party five years ago, picked up the trash, and then left. Stained, worn carpets, beat-up furniture, old, cr-ppy equipment, and we were told that there will be no money spent on the building going forward.

That's all I know. For now, I'm enjoying the hoteling option by taking random offices with a view of the Commodore Barry Bridge. At least I have something to look at while on Teams calls with all my co-workers in other locations.

This company is such a joke. RTO has finally pushed me to update my resume and see what's out there, so maybe some good will come of it.

If you are high enough up the ladder, they protect the WFH with bogus corporate addresses in the directory. Locations that are hours away from where they live, and think we are too stupid to notice.

@bw+1jv921d5n What do you mean by extend the lease? Did the buildings in Wilmington sell? I know last year I was told through the grapevine they sold, but no one ever moved into the other nicer building. So the official word we were given was they were only taken off the market, and they are continuing to invest in it lol

Yeah that’s typical of how HR really has nothing to do with humans or hunanity anymore. Thing is, isn’t there some guidelines too about?distance limits for commuting and what constitutes BAH anyway? How can the company all of a sudden erase that? The company originally OK’d this decision to protect the position. For the original poster to commute to Pittsburgh from KOP is insane. That’s like 300 miles. Even Jersey city is 100 miles from KOP. Forget Lake Mary. I dont think they can legally say to these people ‘relocate where you live or else…’. How can BNY espouse flexibility statements when they truly are not?

That is BS for the tier 3 staff, they should be setting the example, this place is so poorly run. I look forward to when we get a new CEO this one leaves a lot to be desired

If they get rid of our Tier 1 and 2 employees, our system will be dead in the water. I hope I'm still here to see that, because I'll be laughing my a-s off.

Manager here. Employees are being put into three categories.

Tier 1 employees are those based at home and will be given the option to return to office or resign with no severance. This includes anyone who chose to relocate during Covid to a location where there is no local office. Those employees will be gone by year end.

Tier 2 employees are those who are not within 50 miles of an office because their local office closed. They will be gone by end of 2026. Some will be offered the option to relocate with minimal financial assistance or accept the severance.

Tier 3 employees are your executive committee, senior directors and higher who will remain untouched.

Why would you choose one of the far off places they offer only to be laid off or fired within a year? Your other option is to find a new job with a real company that appreciates your talents and efforts. Eff this place.

Most KoP people are now in Wilmington. The current lease run to the end of 2026 with an option to extend to end of 2027. The place seems to be half empty, so I don't know why they wouldn't let you go there.

It's actually not a great option if you live around KoP. The commute to Wilmington seems to be 90 minutes each way for most people, and the traffic is stressful. I've heard people say it took them 2.5 hours to get home some days.

A couple of years ago, my location was going to be closed, and my manager told my options were JC, 240G or resign (in that case, with no severance). He also told me that if I didn't pick a location, one would be assigned to me and if I don't show up there starting on a given date, the company would consider that I had quit my job.

I started going to 240G as WFH was not an option- almost 3 hours commute each way and then laid off last year. At least I got SUB payments and happy for not working there.

For the OP, options will be:

  1. You quit (no severance) because you got a new job or didn't show up in your new location
  2. You'll be put in a PIP (we know how that ends)
  3. You'll be laid off (but then the bank has to pay)

@bp+1jv921d5n They don’t actually want them to move, it’s to get them to quit for severance savings lol

They didn't offer Wilmington? I know it's rumored to close at some point, but didn't think it would be this year.

When they close Pennington, those folks will be given the same choice. The company is looking to eliminate BAH positions. This is the latest push to reduce headcount without paying severance.
