For people considering applying to Bank of America for a career please know ahead of time that you will be required to inform your current manager before applying to a new position. This is a relatively new requirement (maybe two years old) that of course hurts your mobility as it threatens your current role if you are just considering a new role. So it actually hurts career growth at the bank. Example: if you just see a position you are interested in and tell your manager and don’t even get an interview then your manager will know you are looking to leave and will plan accordingly (your salary growth, opportunities, relationship with manager, and maybe first to layoff if it happens). So unless you are certain you will get a position you cannot apply for a new position at the bank without having this risk to your current job. Know this new hires before accepting a position at Bank of America. Look into how other banks handle internal mobility first as you need to consider your career growth in any position.

@OP This recently changed back to only having to notify manager if you get an interview. I am sure people were complaining everywhere. Stops people from even trying to move!!

I wish I hadn’t applied for a job I didn’t get. I know I wasn’t favored by the manager only from a social standpoint. He’s very awkward but has his favorites that make him feel good about himself. I didn’t step in line to do that BS. But I gave my all everyday and do my job well. As requested by HR I told my manager before I applied. No once did he bring it up or check in to see if I got an interview. Which I did , but was told by HR I was 2nd place. So I’m still working for this awkward manager, not playing the game but continuing to do a great job-I will forever be genuine.

@b1 yes. But they should not get an EMAIL with the req and everything. It’s a courtesy, not a requirement unless selected for interview with hiring manager.

Even better! They INSTANTLY get an email as to the requisition as well as that you have applied. All they need to do is reach out to the hiring manager by phone and lie on you and you’re blackballed no matter how talented.

the rule as of now is you will not be able to interview internally unless your immediate supervisor is notified. The one commenting with being a current BOFA employee and applying privately at the bank is not allowed. If you are LOA, you can't even apply because HR will disqualify you if they find out. Check in either the employee handbook or check with a mobility consultant in HR about applying privately.

Additionally even if you are invited to interview, even with a 2nd or 3rd, there is no guarantee you will be hired so I am not sure why you think you can hide your intent to leave from anyone if you are doing the internal mobility program.

That’s not correct. Don’t use the internal site, apply privately by email, you’re not obligated unless you’re offered the position.

@14f Forcing a competing offer/promotion generally doesn't end well. The factors that made you look outside will still be there. I always say that if you find a better option elsewhere, either pursue that or stay back in your current role withn the same compensation/title

@14d Yep (I am the one who wrote that). I will never apply for anything ever again here. If they want me for that role, then they can come and ask me, and we can negotiate for it. Otherwise, the role I have is the one I do until I decide to do it elsewhere. There is no mobility here whatsoever. It is a complete waste of time and utterly useless to try. Best way to get a promotion here, is to present your offer from a competitor and tell them to either make you happy to stay, or head out to the other shop and start farming the clients.

@dc this is very true. I've lived through it and seen it happen to all my other colleagues who left. Either way you're scr3wed. You have to know you're getting the role bf you even apply. So it's also unfair to the employees who don't know the game and do apply for the req. You never had a chance anyway.

Your manager should not be notified if you simply apply. You may not even get an interview. Only after an interview, and if you are still a candidate, should your current manager be notified. This is just another passive aggressive way of making people unhappy and want to quit - which is their goal for reducing headcount.

All Workday systems notify your manager when you apply for a position. You think your fantasy of secretly applying, getting hired, and your manager is going to be some how shock faced when you fail to show up for your prior position? BFFR.

You want career mobility and growth at Bank of America? It’s actually quite easy. Call JP Morgan if you have 5+ years with BOA, Wells Fargo if you have 3+ years. You also get a nice raise, and no BS on the bonus.

Bank of America, keeping JP Morgan #1 like Mercedes keeps Lexus in business..

If your manager likes you, they will talk bad to keep you. Of your manager dislikes you, they will talk bad to sc--w you over. That is exactly why internal mobility is not possible at Bank of America. I’ve been through it, and I saw someone go through it too.

Yes it's an awful policy and only banks who don't care about or actively promote internal mobility do that. It's worse in operations. You won't even get a raise when you move internally. The effectively ki-led it and you should all mention this ridiculous policy in your esat surveys closing this week.
