Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Came from a midsize bank where we actually collaborated

I've learned since then that at BNY, it's every man for himself wrapped in corporate speak about "synergy." The cognitive dissonance is absolutely staggering. They preach teamwork while rewarding backstabbers. Worst part is catching myself adopting the toxic behaviors just to survive. Needless to say, I made a mistake coming here.

It is so so toxic here. We have the most incompetent management staff who are so self aware they use in office work exceptions so they can stay home and have secret meetings “training” India hoping it will save her backside in the end. Keep bending the knee. You’ve reached your peak.

Our culture is really a vulture. It feeds off weak, dead and dying things. And a big part of that has to do with the leadeship our board keeps bringing in here from other places. We do not have home grown, home spun and traditional
People here any longer. At least not where it counts. BNY keeps bringing in these high paid know it all’s and mercenaries from other companies. In that sense, we lose by losing our identity and brand. Sure, you do need outside mind sets and new people but not to the point where you destroy who you are. And that is why we have a lot of mistrust, anger, depression and ‘playing it safe’ here. We get these people who failed at other organizations and they come here thinking they know better. They come here trying to prove themselves over what they were before. And we lose. Our whole concept of what leadership and advancement is here, is just toxic. And no surprise that toxicity sprays upon us all. J. Carter Bacot and Marty Mcguinn are spinning in their graves.

I can relate to the toxicity. I knew what I was getting myself into when I joined 7 years ago, but being a few years from early retirement I decided to give it my best, and I did. What I didn't expect was that my entire program would literally be pulled out from under me and reassigned to someone who had the EC's ear, claimed credit for everything my team built from scratch, and got 6 times the staff I had. No explanation from anyone was ever given, and I was a consistently high performer. Effectively I experienced constructive dismissal, but I found another internal opportunity to get me to the finish line. The last two years I suffered mentally and physically, and the minute I could I resigned (read: retired) and couldn't be happier. I know we all need to earn a living, but seriously think about how you can reinvent yourself and make a plan.

I agree. I used to work for BNY - the culture is toxic. There is no teamwork. It’s a survival environment.

Just left BNY after 17 years to join a regional bank and it is a breath of fresh air. The culture couldn't be any better. Although BNY was a great place to disappear under the radar at the expense of financial/career growth.
