Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Nearing 50, and honestly, scared

Not because I’m attached to this job, but because once you hit 50, nobody wants you anymore. Great way to make you feel like trash. I’ve been trying to prepare, making small investments and looking for other opportunities. You’d think decades of experience, specialized skills, and deep knowledge would be valued. Nope. Once you’re over 50, people treat you like you’re already dead. It’s a horrible feeling, leaving you with nothing but defeat.

@a8 Haaaa! Not ready for the glue factory! Great horse analogy and so very true! Great post.

Remember always: You have value, your life has value, your life has meaning. Maybe not to BNY, but to others within your reach and influence.

No matter who you are, what you've learned, how much you've impacted the business, EVERYONE is replaceable and is on someone's list!

BNY senior leaders are making bank while taking great pride in fact testing this axiom, adding more bones to the pile and waiting for more glue to set.

When I was 50, on the day I survived a layoff but some coworkers didn't, a manager in his mid 30s told me he thought everyone 50 and older should be laid off. I often wonder about him now that he is over 50. Does he still think everyone over 50 should be laid off?

This lovely company laid me off 1 month before my 60th birthday. That was after giving me the first unsatisfactory review I had ever received in a 39 year career. Forced retirement well before i planned for it.

Laid off from BNY at 53, found a better job three months later. It’s fine, just get to looking!

You can find something. My dad found a new job at 60. Of course that was 11 years ago and what seems like a different lifetime but it’s doable. Don’t give up. It’s this place!

Just remember OP, never put a company or business world over your life. You say no one wants you. That is untrue. Your family, spouse, children, dogs, cats , friends etc. all want you and need you. And those are the most important souls in your life. It is true what you say about the job market and it’s really not age as much as it is cost. In our 40’s , 50’s , 60’s we know more and call for more salary. But it’s a longshot to get it. I love all these hogwash linked in and self help articles that offer peter pan advice and make it look so easy for a 50+ to get an even better position. It just isn’t true. If it were, all of us would have been out of here and well established elsewhere and we are not. What is more resentful? Giving your career to BNY and being great and dedicated and now being treated like some old cab horse ready for the glue factory. But just remember, the most important thing isnt money but those who care for you.

@OP I got laid off June 2024 at 48 years old. I am now 49 years old and still looking for a job. I feel the same way you do - I'm scared.
