I am on an expat assignment overseas and want to leave the company. No recognition or appreciation for my effort so why stay. Trouble is what happens if I quit? Do I have to move myself back to the US?

Wow you can judge the quality of US expats being sent outside the country by this question.... Brilliant!!
@vg depends on your role. If in an ExxonMobil office probably true. If second into another company you are more likely to be overworked. And as for the big bucks that is no longer the case.
Sheet.... keep banking the expat big bucks, do some consulting on the side. Everyone knows expats are mostly figureheads protecting Company interests, not really too busy.
@OP Have you…tried using the internet to search for jobs? Almost all applications are done online via company websites or job boards. Most interviews are virtual, especially early in the hiring process. You should have zero trouble hunting for a job while overseas.
Don’t quit while you’re overseas unless you have a signed offer letter with an ironclad start date.
This is all covered in the expat synopsis. The company will get you back home. It happens more often than you think.
