Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

How are layoffs implemented via teams?

Do you get a 1:1 meeting request?

You will get an invite but within the body it won’t look like the traditional invites, there will be just a link for you to join and you won’t see anyone else but the sender on the invite. Once you join, if you see more than your boss on screen, you are the lucky winner of a severance package. It will be scary, but they are doing you a favor! BNY is no longer a good place to work. Hasn’t been for a few years now. And it’s only getting worse.

Wow, if HR doesn’t get involved in layoffs these days then what are they doing? The performance management process is Byzantine. The outsourced functions to single sign on to Buck work only a fraction of the time. And the recent “improvements” to the 401K and the 4 shares are only worth the comedic value.

I think that you might misunderstand: “He didn't even thank me for my long tenured service. Was more interested in getting my home address and personal email right.”

Your manager actually was emphasizing the important points. Getting your home address and personal email is KEY to getting your package, returning your hardware and getting the payments. Once you’re terminated you have very little access to Human Resources.

My advice is to read the paperwork closely, follow all of the steps and get tracking numbers for all equipment that you send back. Pay attention to all instructions and keep evidence.

“Mines” is a helluva lot worse than a typo…

It's a three-minute conversation. Your job is being eliminated, blah blah, blah. Even if your manager is a decent person they cannot say anymore, I could tell mine was upset by the tone of his voice and body language. That's the best one can hope for, to see a sliver of humanity.

@fuu, having been there I totally understand how you feel. Mines was a quick call early in the morning by my Director advising me of my position being eliminated. They pretty much were pushing as much work overseas. I never really cared for my director and was not surprised of the cold nature of his call to while we were working from home duriing the pandemic. Just consider yourself lucky to be gone from a company that truly does not care about it's employees. It's not what you know, but who you know and how much a-s you kiss in order to keep the job. Been gone a few years now and I no longer keep in touch with most of the co-workers who swore they were my friend (side eye, eyes rolling). The best is yet to come, wish you nothing but the best in your new place of employment. Apologies if you find any typos.

It started and was over in under 3 minutes. My darling manager told me my position was being "eliminated". He didn't even thank me for my long tenured service. Was more interested in getting my home address and personal email right. I hope the favor is returned to him in kind. It would make my year!

I had to do this on the other side a few months ago - that is, I as the direct manager, had to have the talk with the employee who was getting let go. But yes, your direct manager would set up a teams call and the process would be over in 10 minutes.

HR doesnt bother to get themselves involved anymore. It used to be a more senior manager and HR would get the person in the room (in person) and the person would grab their stuff and leave.

What I can tell you is that HR will give your manager a script to follow and have them send directions and notes about his or her package and instructions on mailing equipment back. It all happens in under 15 minutes.

In my case, I had no warning I had to let someone go until the Monday I came back from my two week vacation. HR is atrocious here and highly disorganized. Thank god I found something better before it was my turn.

One of my peer was called on his phone and was told that his position is redundant and HR will contact you soon on the next steps. That’s it, all managers are very cold to this I am not blaming them, they are kissing their bosses A**es. If managers really care about people there are many hits they can give right from reviews time till his name is nominated.
