If you are close to retirement you do NOT ‘usually’ get a severance package plus payment. There is no such thing as a severance package. I know people who wanted to retire and talked to their managers to see if they could be let go with the goal to get that supplemental unemployment benefit package. And the spiteful manager said no. I know other people who told their manager they wanted their name to be considered for the next layoffs. And their manager was fine with the idea. Some management can be spiteful toward older workers.

If you are close to retirement, you usually get a severance package plus payment for the months you would be working up until retirement.
