Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Do we really need interns?

Isn’t it unwise to be hiring summer interns while laying off experienced employees left and right? If we need to cut costs, shouldn’t we start with interns, who are a net drain on resources?

The purpose of an internship program is to build a pipeline to hire entry level workers. Are we really going to hire entry level workers? Isn’t AI going to do all the entry-level work? Even if we are going to hire entry level workers, is it necessary to recruit them prior to graduation? There are thousands of them desperate for jobs.

I feel sorry for students right now, but does it make sense to spend time and money on an internship program?

@qn correct people don't typically arrive broken but they sure do leave this place that way.

Hiring interns is hilarious and a waste of resources. It is about " involving the community" to look good to the ones on top and/or shareholders. What can you learn from a toxic company that takes a year to learn to work here with a paycheck.

More slave labor

@mc,
People don't arrive broken. They start with passion and yearning 'til something comes along that disabuses them of these notions.

They are paraded around like a trophy. It’s kinda creepy. After the honeymoon is over they will be here like the rest of us.

My opinion, we need interns. Many of the colleagues have started as interns and joined us once they graduate. They bring passion that many of you on this site do not have. Nice to have interns that care and want to be here.

@bf I don't think you meant to use the word "nubile" here! Perhaps "agile"? I really hope we aren't targeting "nubile" interns!

My team consistently participated in this program for several years (not sure if we'll get interns this year), and has found some rockstars as a result, people who were hired and are doing well years later.

I agree with your sentiment, but I do also see the value in the program.

Companies hire interns because internships help them identify and train potential future employees before making full-time hiring decisions. Interns can also contribute to projects while bringing fresh ideas, new skills, and up-to-date knowledge from school. Internship programs help companies build a stronger talent pipeline, improve recruiting, and support the future growth of their industry.

They’re cheap and usually pretty eager! Of course they will hire them - (weren’t we all ‘them’ at one time young and eager it’s not the interns fault)

Unpaid interns are critical to the well functioning of any company of substance.

Because interns cost a lot less than experienced people. The company is happy to be able to get a lot of people applying for positions. If you haven't noticed they are riffing those that have been here the longest in most cases and who make good salaries and then are hiring less experienced (or sometimes even experienced) people in similar roles for less money and decreased AIP. It is all about more for companies/wall street and less for regular people. Our salaries are being decreased from riff (finding another role but making less), this is across multiple industries/companies, not just this one. They can get entry level and even experienced people for so much less which means more for them. Of course the cost of living isn't decreasing. This current strategy is not sustainable for regular people.

They need to keep up appearances. Plus most of the interns have a connection to a leader so it helps their friends and families.
