Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

I feel so defeated. The shoplifters won.

Ever since the directive has shifted to no use of force my store has been getting robbed blind.

I’m an ap manager and I as well as my team has to sit and watch the thieves ransack our store and there is literally nothing we can do about it other than “can you come with me”.

The colleagues hate us now and think we’re lazy because they see it happening but it isn’t our fault.

What we are allowed to do has changed for the negative but the expectations are still high. My director continues to push for productivity despite our hands literally being tied behind our backs.

Lord I hope this changes soon. We are one of the only retailers in our mall with this policy and as a result all of the thieves come here. 35 years in loss prevention and I’ve never seen it this bad.

Our AP folks will 'burn' them by walking by and pretending to talk to someone presumably on an earpiece and say things like 'yep, we've got the suspect in sight' and they generally drop their merchandise

Probably to prevent harm to life incidents. A department store can’t solve larger economic, cultural and ethical issues.

Is there a reason why Macy's has gone in this direction regarding loss prevention?
It's so discouraging seeing thieves come in my store and just pillage all of our active wear (which is by the door of all things) and there's nothing we can do but look.

Are there any other Dept store companies that follow the same type of directives like we do? This is so d-mb and then people wonder why our store doesn't have good merchandise because the decent merchandise we have gets stolen and from a business perspective, these same brands get edited out.

@OP Anyone else think that the thieves "boost" Macy's fragrance testers and gift sets, then sell them to the no-name shops in the mall?

When my store had as I call them smash and grabs (no smash but lots of grabs) I would literally lock down as much polo as I could. They actually tried to rip them off the fixtures but thankfully they didn't. They still grabbed a lot of polo sweats and a few Nike things in a matter of 3 minutes. Thankfully another retailer finally caught them and the shop lifting has gotten better. Yeah we still have our petty theft in polo but going to handfuls every few months to a piece here and there is nice.

One bad stop can cost alot more than something that has a 85% markup
