Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

Layoffs don't have to be a bad thing

If leadership cut the actual dead weight, it could make us stronger. But that's not what happens. They keep laying off key people from critical roles. The ones who keep things running and the ones who solve problems. And they keep the ones who don't do anything. This has been going on for years and it's crippling the company. It makes absolutely no sense.

It’s called managing by attrition to hit a number for an IPO. People mean nothing, they’re just numbers in a spreadsheet to be zeroed out whenever most expedient towards that goal.

There is nothing wrong with cost reduction in principle.

Every company, including Nielsen, has the right to review its structure, reduce complexity and make difficult decisions when needed. Layoffs are never pleasant, but they are not automatically a sign of bad management.

The issue is when the story being told does not match reality.

When experienced people are removed in the name of “efficiency” and replaced by expensive leadership layers in so-called low-cost hubs, this is no longer a cost-reduction strategy.

It is a redistribution of influence.

And when hiring appears to be driven more by personal networks than by proven competence, the result is predictable: higher costs, lower accountability, weaker execution and a gradual loss of business knowledge.

You do not save a company by removing the people who understand the products, the clients and the markets.

You do not build a stronger organization by replacing expertise with internal politics.

Cost reduction and destroying a business are not the same thing.

Unfortunately, some companies seem very good at confusing the two.

If leadership cut the actual dead weight, it could make us stronger.

That would mean admitting defeat (e.g. close the India offices and go back to the US)
