Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Hybrid Work Tracking Dashboards

What do you think about those dashboards that will be launched soon and how do you think they will be utilised by the business?

Will they induce layoffs based on attendance?

Great timing at the end of terms and start of the school holidays when working families will be struggling more than usual. Another example of cr-p timing like most things they do. Could’ve waited until September.

Haha I’ve logged my first “working away from the office day” in the system for a travel day. Kinda stupid, but whatever our leadership wants I will do as long as it is safe and ethical.

I'd encourage everyone to delete Teams and Outlook from your phones - if they want a job done in office, leave it at the office. I'm fully prepared to cooperate entirely with this. "Sorry boss, can't take my usual 8am call with the global team, I'm stuck in traffic. Better reschedule it."

@aq 6-7 years ago we had 9/80 and were not in 5 days a week. Give us back 9/80 and I’ll happily be in office every working day.

The 🇮🇳 (Pune and Bangalore) love this high latency surveillance. Please stop pedestaling bp and its systems. The company is not relational or transactional. Time for real reality to start permeating this sh-t hole

This is so cute.

While they outsource jobs for the US to India they demand hybrid tracking 😂 what a joke

Should have just fired all the wa-kers who obviously can't follow directions. Now we all get punished.

The point is that days in office is a metric that correlates with nothing. bP has massively floundered over the years. none of that has to do with people being in office or working from home. This is just a stupid system put in place for no reason. People were in the office every day from the early 2000s until 2020 and the company sunk like an anchor during that period.

What is the point of this? Think about it. You have to get permission from your manager to work offsite. Then you have to login and fill out a request form for something you’ve already discussed with your manager. Then your manager has to receive, review and approve the request that they have already agreed to. This is completely unnecessary and it is yet another time-consuming process that is ALREADY being done in face-to-face conversations between managers and employees. We are adding duplicative work for an administrative task that does not contribute to actual productivity and profitability. The fact that leadership thinks we need this process shows that they think our mid-level managers are incapable of managing their direct reports. What is going on?

@OP Too many people have been gaming the hybrid setup, so it’s about time it got stamped out.

If the business is rolling out attendance tracking dashboards, they’re clearly signalling a shift: hybrid is no longer trust based, it’s data verified. Once leadership has hard numbers on who’s actually showing up, they’ll use them not necessarily for immediate layoffs, but definitely for performance conversations, promotion decisions, and identifying low engagement teams.

Will it lead to layoffs? Not directly. But it will absolutely make it easier to justify them when the next cost cutting cycle comes around.

In short: the dashboards aren’t the problem the behaviour that triggered them is.

The BP yoga pant wearing supervisory class wants…actually demands Monday and Friday at home, Pilates studio, traveling…they do not want collaboration or systems that show the value of authenticity empowered small teams achieving success…just like bp competitors who purchase bp assets…they do more with less and higher success and ownership…

Meg is now on the hot seat…the days of deference and automatic praise are done…simplify by getting rid of this middle management blockers to success…

This is a stupid email.

It replaces what matters with what is easy.
Performance matters.

Every team achieves it in its own way, especially given how many different offices and time zones we operate across.

But instead of introducing a proper performance review and focus, they are introducing a simple substitute: office attendance.

@aw I’m sure they are tracking it but they explicitly said in the email that they are not tracking it on the dashboard.

@aq when we were 5 days in office, we had team members at our respective sites. Along with senior leaders that sat with us. We had site services to support the office. We had a robust office culture.

Now the senior leaders sit in UK, majority of teams are global (india/malaysia/etc), and there are single site-based employees still tethering on here.

The circumstances are different. I understand we are hybrid workers, but we deserve a designated space to sit and folks to collaborate with. We also should have leaders who we can sit around and learn from.

I think we can all agree working for BP is not what it once was, but almost everyone is contracted to work 3d a week in the office.

I don’t see why anyone should be upset or put out that they want to enforce that - also it says in the line manager guidance to review adhoc exceptions where appropriate.

6-7 years ago we were in 5d a week it’s still pretty attractive proposition

My whole team is global. No one sits in my location/country. I don’t even have a designated team to sit with— I have to sit with the wider group, whom I share little relationship with.

Sure, I will drag my a-s to office and watch paint dry to make the big bosses happy. Wtf

I actually laughed out loud when I saw that.

Remember folks, if you're just as effective from home then an Indian can be just as effective from Pune or Bangalore.
