Can anyone list any innovative improvements / enhancements Dell has made to Data Domain since EMC was acquired over 10 years go?
NOTE: Cloud Tier doesn't count since it never worked.

Just watched the Odyssey in the iMAX. Didn’t like it much. Data Domain is better.

@p7 ppdm came to market in 2019 woefully inadequate. Odds are favorable broadcom ki-ls dell access to how transparent snapshots are integrated via ddboost. Deprication is all but guaranteed. Ppdm name 5 customers that run it aside from being and msd capital

@e3 cloud tier is misunderstood and misused by customers . It's supposed to be for long term backup think Longer than and multiple years. Not when you need a restore for production. Its gotta be over 10 years though I think so doesn't qualify for this. What about smartscale oh wait that isn't out yet. Talk of scale out for over a decade still nothing and if they finally put something out it will be minimally viable only suitable for the most basic of customers who will not want to pay for it. The real question is should they ki-l ppdm and focus on data domain?

@ek Yes, Simon Jelley is the same guy who basically destroyed Backup Exec and NetBackup. Dell only brings in the failed leftovers. Cohesity didn't want anything to do with him after it acquired the data protection business.
DD9900 to DD9910 same 8TB 7200 rpm sata then sas drives for a decade. Dell makes up high dedupe numbers because they consider ever backup is a full. Same core functions since inception. Maybe you could say secure snapshots . They will eventually drop I series support. The HA is a joke. You have to buy a fail over head for each system vs scale out non disruptive upgrade more resilient competition clusters. The new fat guy is a Symantec cast off who is ignorantly wading into the abyss. Simon nice guy thinks writing a blog makes a difference. So in short nothing really new in decades. DD team can barely plug cve. Oh wait they came out with a small dd that didn't fit in a standard 19 inch rack and requires a deep rack that no one was aware of. Run from SRP

My customers said it was the worst implementation of cloud storage they'd ever seen. Never even made it off the ground.

We have been beaten into our heads that workloads are coming back on-prem. I see companies making hyperscalers the priority with on-prem being information I have no choice; it needs to be on-prem.
nope, but there have been plenty of security issues, one requiring people in the know to sign an NDA and then recommended patch messages on all applications that interface with DD.
My customers don't care about deduplication anymore. Cloud storage is cheap and requires less hardware and infrastructure.
Dell missed this boat by a mile. Too greedy. Too arrogant. Too stuupid. Thought on-prem storage would last forever.

Lots of innovative ways to su-k RSUs for top leadership for better part of a decade now.. that requires innovation.
