Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Loff

It often feels like employees with strong connections or managerial support receive more flexibility, while regular, hardworking employees are the ones most affected during layoffs. Performance should matter more than favoritism.

Both sides of this debate are a little wrong. You should definitely spend time talking up what you’re working on to your boss and develop good relationships with their peers. Even if what you’re working on is uninspiring and ho-hum. Otherwise, they won’t even notice if you quietly do a kick a-s job. They’re not the smartest, most perceptive people and they’re also very busy.

Those who take the time to do this get recognized and promoted even if their work is subpar. Those who don’t get passed over even if their work is stellar.

It sounds to me like a lot of whining by people that think they deserve something when they don’t. People keep other people around that make them look good. Just the fact that that you’re on this board complaining that “it’s not fair” tells me everything. I wouldn’t want you working for me either.

There’s a lot of truth in that. If you're in NOVA and you’re tight with the sr. director, you’re good! Most of the techs and managers left are in this group.

Good luck to all and keep in mind, there’s other places in the area that pay more and actually care..

@a4 They “earned it” by su-king up to their higher ups. Su-king up to your boss and their peers for a minimum of 30 minutes a day is part of a healthy lifestyle and can do wonders for your career at Verizon.

You have to ask yourself why those people are protected. What did they do to EARN that protection. Then you have to ask yourself. Why you don’t have it. I can guarantee you. If they don’t care if you leave or not. You’re not the “hard worker” you think you are.
