Samsung Electronics America and Samsung SDS America filed WARN notices confirming nearly 1,000 layoffs in New Jersey as the company relocates its US headquarters to Plano, Texas. The cuts land less than a year after Samsung opened a brand new Englewood Cliffs campus.

The official story going around is that only 739 roles are affected, but that's just a fraction of the real number. The numbers are much higher. This official number also does not include Contractors laid off. SEA has been conducting compliance phone and laptop audits in batches to terminate workers regularly since at least March 2026. If a worker is hit with a phone audit, Samsung has already made the decision to terminate that person.
SEA has been making lists of workers to fire for "policy violations" so they can legally avoid paying out severance, or, if you're based in NJ, get out of paying your relocation package. Same thing with contractors as a quick and easy way to slash budgets. It is simply the easiest way for them to fire people without paying out what they owe. To do this, they will confiscate your work phone and laptop and dig back as far as seven years or more just to find any excuse to fire you for cause.
And make no mistake, the audit team WILL find something. SEA’s strategy right now is to find literally anything they can use as a minor infraction and suddenly deem it a fireable policy violation. Over the past few months, people have been let go for ridiculous things like personal emails, basic internet history, taking a work call on a personal device, traveling, minor RTO attendance hiccups, logging into social media, or even taking completely non-confidential photos or videos while at work.
The pettiness goes even further. Samsung is actually combing through security footage to fire people for stealing sugar packets and guest mugs at the coffee stations. Employees have also received the axe for allegedly not paying for extra soda or chips at the mini markets or skipping payment for double protein at the NJ cafeteria. Classify it as theft and security immediately removes you from the premises.
Nobody is safe from this, either. These targeted audits are affecting all positions across the board, from VPs, directors, and managers all the way down to entry-level employees.
The worst part is how they handle the aftermath. If you get caught up in these audits and fired, Samsung will specifically tell your immediate team that you committed a policy violation and have been "effectively terminated," and then they strictly restrict anyone from communicating with you. It is entirely a risk mitigation tactic designed to scare the absolute he-l out of the remaining employees. It keeps everyone in line and stops people from questioning what happened to their coworkers. The whole thing is a complete farce, so please watch your backs out there.

Samsung says there is no broad global restructuring of its consumer electronics business. The company says the headquarters move will improve collaboration and support its AI strategy.
Current employees told Reuters they are concerned that more layoffs and additional organization changes may follow.
