Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Why are you worried about cuts?

Severance is the only thing that gets me excited these days. This place has turned into a toxic nightmare and I can't see how staying here would be a positive for anybody. I check here in hope of hearing of more cuts coming, not in fear. Give me a package and I'm gone.

SAS has never done a "low performer purge". They do "high salary purges", which unfortunately include both low and high performers.

They also occasionally purge underperforming product lines, like Retail. I wish there were more of that.

@y1 So what if they are an HR person? You don’t like opionions that don’t match your own or just from HR people?

and you equate grandpa(old) with low performer?

Someone has issues.

Whether Fortune was pay to play is irrelevant. JM was a happy talking head until her personal dalliance with another member of the C team became common knowledge. She went underground at a time when it should not have been allowed. There was zero HR leadership during the entire span of the pandemic and for what JM is probably paid, that's unacceptable. She continues to keep her head in the sand to this day - also unacceptable. I'd appreciate a functional head of HR and not a ghost.

I think we knew that we were falling hard on the list so didnt bother...it wasnt that we didnt have anything left to prove but rather were no longer cream of the crop. Still decent, just not top 100 material.

After years of being on the Fortune list, and at the top for at least 2 years, SAS voluntarily decided to stop submitting applications. It was a HUGE amount of work for many people. The folks who worked on it were tired of it and the big guy said enough. I was involved and saw firsthand. After 20 years of being on the list, what did we have left to prove? I’m sure some will say we stopped because of fear of our rank plummeting but I assure you that’s not the case.

I understand the JM comments but what do you want/expect her to say? They don’t need me defending them, and I’ve had issues with them, but HR seems like a thankless job.

@ve again, honest question, what was it that she did/did’t do? As an IC I don’t interact with HR. On any given day I wouldn’t know if they were at the beach or snoozing in their office.

JM showed zero leadership during a time when it was very sorely needed. Like so many other execs and directors here, she decamped to her beach house and made a couple of lame video messages and that's about it. And since then she's essentially disappeared. It's weird and she should have done and should be doing better.

@pt genuinely curious why you think she dropped the ball. Not defending, just curious.

She dropped the ball big time during covid, the only time in history the company needed HR to step up annd lead, and she has never been seen or heard from again. Funny how when the company drops out of the Fortune rankings for great places to work, she's suddenly nowhere to be found. Most companies would have sacked their head of HR after such a decline.

@br this is a great point, I haven’t seen or heard of JM in a long time…

@br SAS is reducing headcount by ~2.5% every year -- presumably to ensure profitability. Management knows this is a morale hit.

They could clearly increase profits by doing a mass layoff. But they are foregoing those profits by being kinder to their employees.

This policy may not seem like kindness when you're in the middle of it. But it buys you time to make your plans and find your next path.

@b7 they should be worried about low morale. Low morale = low productivity and output, which will further add to the decline. They make us take those silly surveys every year but nothing ever changes. And when is the last time we even heard from or saw our head HR person? The silence always speaks volumes. We are all like that meme with the dog sitting in the middle of the room with the walls on fire surrounding them. And no one is coming to save us. Management does not care to save us. They have made that very clear.

@av Management understands that, but it is a minor effect. The decline of SAS is mainly driven by revenues declining against expenses. Morale is a factor, but not the biggest factor.

I was a Principal, with morale as low as could be, so I left. They didn't try to talk me into staying. They just replaced me with a Junior, and they seemed perfectly happy to cut costs in that way.

If your morale drops low enough that you leave, you'll see a similar result.

They don't want poor morale; any manager would prefer that employees be happy. But revenues declining against expenses outweighs any decline in morale.

Upper management should understand that the decline will hasten with declining morale.

I was exactly in that mindset a few years ago. But was in my early 60's and financially ready. It's a whole different outlook for folks in their 40's and 50's who can't retire yet and other job opportunities aren't that promising. The current climate is very worrisome for those folks and I understand and sympathize with them.
