Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Salary positions

Quick question. We are salary employees, we have recently been required to work holidays with only a 15% diff, if the holiday fall on the weekend. If it falls during the week we get no additional money. Also we are required to stay late, people are missing lunches and breaks to get all the required work completed. However if there is no work in the queue we are still held to the same production metrics. Now we have recently found out that if for some reason we have a loss of power or internet access, we must flex the hours or take pto. It seems like the salary benefits only favor the company and leaves the employees with no work life balance.

@rw Yeah only those directors and above get to take off 4-6 hours and not take any PTO but not a single one of their employees can do the same.

@ra Can you tell me exactly what benefits are afforded the employees that are Salary?? Shouldn’t it be give and take? We work late etc when needed.. but why am I tied to a desk and still held accountable for metrics on days there isn’t any work in the queues. Why is it, that I lose connectivity for a few hours, I have to make up that work time and flex? I’m not afforded the time back when I do work through my lunch, breaks or work late. It seems like this salary situation only benefits our employer. Behavior like that doesn’t promote a healthy relationship with this company. It makes people angry and resentful. If they would give a bit more, they would find people are willing to work harder for them. Right now most people are doing the bare minimum and going home.

How are you a salaried employee and getting a differential? That doesn't make sense. Salaried by definition means you get what you get regardless of whether you work weekends or holidays. Do you report your time for each day worked ?

As a salaried URN (with the company for 11yrs) and an RN of 31yrs...we have never had to work Holidays-we had staff volunteer. And if you work extra it is $150/4hrs and $300/8hrs OR equivalent time off in the same pay period.

@kh I didn't know any moms who were homes in the 80s.

I’ve been with the company for almost a decade and salaried positions have been like that the whole time.

And the income to house ratio was like half what it is today. You can Google it. It now takes two full incomes to afford a house and still it’s hard. Wasn’t like that back then and you know it. Moms got to actually stay home and be homes.

@k9 100% People who lived in the 80's would be jealous of interest rates below 12%.

@jy You must not remember the Reagan years with high unemployment and high interest rates.

@OP Why is there a pay differential for salary? I'm not saying it is good or bad just never heard of that in a salary job. I've very surprised they are giving you 15%, let alone anything.

@gj boomer mentality with your house that’s worth a million you bought for $2 in 1980. yet people our age have a 7% interest rate and $4 a gallon gas. You are so out of touch. We will not work evenings and weekends. Good luck slaving to the man. A big middle finger to you and we won’t back down.

@OP I don't want to say this, but I will. You are no longer competing against a human for your job. You are competing with a machine called AI. It doesn't need work-life balance. Most corporations will tell you, "Take it or Leave it!" Your choice.
This is the future of human jobs. Keep the job, stop complaining, work the hours required, and save your money. This is the new way of work. Lots of salary earners work late during weekdays and put in hours during weekend. This is now a daily routine for many that want to keep a job. Else, they will replace you, offshore the job, or get AI to do it.

As a salaried employee, I'm surprised there's any sort of holiday differential. Most of the time, it's just "you get another day off, in trade." The tradeoff for having a fixed income, is they get to require you to work extra hours and through lunches, without having to pay you one cent more.

@av I’ll give you the same advice I give to everyone. Optum is a sinking ship. It’s been going downhill for 5-6 years now. Every year they take a little more away from employees while expecting higher and higher output. It’s time to leave. It’s time to clean up that resume and put real thought into applying outside Optum. That’s what I’m doing, that’s what many here are doing. It’s hard but our day will come and it’s better to leave on your terms than the companies terms.

It’s in the policy you can look it up. Work and go home. don’t let this job take over your life. Dont let some boomer director mess with your stress level. Let it go.

@a4 Not when you were hired on as Monday-Friday 8-430 with specific company paid holidays off. I’m sure as a nurse Practitioner you are well compensated for your extra time and effort.
