Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Medtronic Structural Heart Layoff Package

I was an R&D Engineer I with Medtronic for a year, with 7 months of prior co-op experience on the same team. In May of 2026, the project I was on was significantly gashed, resulting in functional leaders having less project work to give out than engineering resources available. Sadly, I was quite an easy target for the project to drop and my manager to no longer need. I'm posting the severance package here because I relied heavily on this site as rumors were swirling before the layoff.

My severance package:

  • 2 months of "garden leave" where I still received full pay and was "technically" still an employee
  • 4 weeks of true severance pay, given in a lump sum payment once I signed the separation agreement (no non-compete was given)
  • Unprotected PTO payout (keep in mind that the protected PTO does NOT get paid out, so if you think you'll be laid off, be sure to use all of your protected PTO)
  • MIP was still given (yearly bonus and additional 401k contributions)
  • Unvested company contributions to my 401k will be rescinded, so after the MIP payout they will be taking $7k back from my 401k.
  • They offered job placement help both within Medtronic and externally

All said and done, I couldn't have asked for a much better package (except the unvested 401k contributions being taken back). However, it still su-ks to get laid off.

Be prepared for a meeting to be put on your calendar after working hours. It will be your manager and an HR rep. The HR rep will be thoroughly unhelpful in answering questions.

@e4 Right. Even with a large severance (year or more of salary) that’s a one-time payment and then done vs. the cost to pay you every year for X years.

I’ve been here 10 years and while my salary is probably a good bit higher than a recent hire my severance package would approach a year’s pay. Decision makers are looking at both the salary saved in future years and the amount of severance to pay this year.

@dc I’m pretty sure there’s one super salty guy on here who is repeatedly posting things like people only get RIF’d if they deserve it and all Minnesota employees are worthless. I’m sure they are a joy to work with and have healthy relationships outside of work.

@as I don't believe this comment is beneficial to anybody, other than serving as an insult to @OP . We are all on this forum to see and discuss the reality of working for Medtronic, not to degrade young engineers.

I made the mistake of not using my protected PTO first, and I’m in a state where Medtronic forfeits unused protected PTO, which I discovered after being RIFd.

@b2 the 401k Medtronic match is 3 year "cliff" vesting. so if you leave before 3 years, you don't get the match. it shows in your account, but is not "vested" until you've been there 3 years

@OP can you explain more about the unvested 401k contributions?

Thanks for posting details. Protected PTO may get paid out for employees of some states like CA, CO.

Medtronic does not usually go after someone with favorable low salary unless future potential is very limited for that individual.

@a5 My official termination date was July 7th, but I was informed of the layoff at the start of May.
