Yearly Promotions

Why are promotions only happening yearly now? I was told during my comp discussion that I am at the top of the list to be promoted next year and that I deserve it, so why didn't I get promoted this year and why do they have to wait a year to promote someone who deserves it?

@cwvq+1l9I2Onq no, it doesn’t. Promotions are once a year.

@1roe

Exactly my experience as well. Payless job grade promotions with awesome reviews. Never once a pay raise with a promotion but for major projects often a nice bonus at the J & K levels. I’ve never yet had a raise with a promotion. All of my best raises and bonuses came from really big projects… but never once after a promotion. L on up is where the real bonuses and raises become tied to promotioms.

Now at the beginning at the Senior level titles it’s different. Bit for promotions to J,K,L…. nope. Don’t hold your breath waiting unless you’re best buds with your manager.

The corp policy states that all promotions till L can happen quarterly or half yearly. Only M and above are yearly so you have every right to go and ask your manager or your managers manager which is usually the case to put your name for the upcoming June cycle.

Job grade K Pittsburgh, low end of salary range. Rated exceeds.
Merit is 2.9 percent. Such an insult.

IIRC, when they changed most promotions to an annual cycle, the reasoning was that it allowed approvers to review all recommendations at once vs piecemeal so they can properly prioritize and make better decisions, and there is logic to that.

And I can confirm that promotions don’t always come with money. I recall two or three Decembers ago when the HR comp folks told me and my fellow managers that any December promotees would not receive merit increases or salary adjustments. We had the option to use our paltry merit increase budgets for that purpose… but our budgets were so small that it only would have meant a few hundred, which is a slap in the face.

Here’s where managers can be in a bad spot. They may have an employee whose promotion they have been championing with their boss. But that boss will ultimately have twice as many employees recommended for promotions as there are spots. The manager has little control over who the boss approves.

@1plc+1l9I2Onq so you are saying if I'm below L they can promote quarterly still?

AFAIK they changed the evaulation to 3 months, up to lvl L.
if they really wanted to promote you they would have done so and have had the chance every quarter.

No worries… even with promotions with glorious reviews I’ve yet to ever have a raise with a promotion. All of my raises came from really big projects… never once after a promotions.
