I remember when I was laid off as a young man working in a completely different industry, and it was a major blow. But one thing I learned is that the job market is constantly changing and evolving, and you have to make sure you are adaptable to keep up with it.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, try not to get too down on yourself. Layoffs are never a reflection of your worth as a person or your skills as a worker. Take some time to assess your options and consider switching industries if necessary. There might be a better fit for you that you hadn't considered before.

If you work for BNYM then you should expect to be laid off. Don’t plan on being there 15 years. Plus you don’t want to be there 15 years
Yup, my position was conveniently "eliminated" without so much as a whisper of warning!
At BK it hasn't been related to your worth for the last decade. Before that, we did let the lower ranked people go first. I've seen several VERY talented employees fired in the last 5 years when their positions were "eliminated". Most companies would have kept them on and found them some other way to keep making us money. But instead they reduced payroll immediately and the loss is hidden as it's buried deep without our numbers.
Yes. Don't take it personally. The experience was great for the first 5 years. Then it is time to move on and get out of this place.
