Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Syracuse, not Oriskany

Close Oriskany office, and reopen a small Syracuse location. Can’t have an office in the middle of nowhere. Stupid & biased decision was made in Jan. 2021 to close E Syracuse and keep Oriskany

@eezk, long commutes is one of the biggest reasons people choose to live in areas that pay half as much and are hours away from a level 1 trauma center.

Oh my god give it a rest. I’ve had years with 3 hour round trip commutes. You gotta do what you gotta do. Is this a millennial whine? Just do a job search… it’s not indentured servitude.

My thought is; it's all a ploy to rock the boat for people to jump willingly so when their plan comes together there is less people to layoff and give a severance package to.

I heard that Oriskany office will be closing in 2025 and everything is being moved to the White Plains NY location.

This is quite likely the most self-absorbed post ever on this board. The Entitlement, the arrogance, the self absorbed whining. Wow.

Curious why you waited 3 years to address the fact that you were going to have to work out of Oriskany. Three years is plenty of time to conduct a picky job search that would let you live your best life.

Employment is at will. You are free to leave and work elsewhere at any time and the Bank is free to require you to show up at your work location. You’re not even being asked to come in full time. This is like a tempest in a teapot.

Surely you’re aware that NYC is the easiest city to find financial or financial systems work in the world. Take a positive approach and start a job search. You’ll be much better off.

@2dtp, right, even if there aren't whiteout conditions from snow you'll be spending an extra $3,000 per year on gas and put an extra 20,000 miles on your car.

@OP

I think that you’re spinning in circles. Decide to drive to Oriskany or start a job search in NYC. You can do both at the same time. A peaceful rural drive is an excellent time to think on the options and you have your NYC days to interview.

Good luck and it’s likely to work out well for you.

As someone who has access to location/grade actual costs by cost center, I can say Lake Mary isn’t that much cheaper than NY, as crazy as that sounds. There have been a lot of transplants from NY to FL over the years so that could skew the data a bit, but there are a few disadvantages in general. Several ops managers have had trouble finding people with relevant background because of that area. Also, we lost a major client 10 years ago because the work shifted from NY to FL. The area is also more susceptible to hurricanes. Great people down there, but not the end all be all place for ops. They should keep a notable presence but not go overboard.

Look on the bright side…. It’s taken 15 years… all of this time… to be treated as if you had been acquired by BONY & worked in Pittsburgh. Welcome to our world.

No trollies in Pgh since the subway came in 20 years ago. Parking for subway fills by 6:00 a.m. Driving is the only alternative unless you live near the end of the line.

You missed all the points made in this point and seem fixated only on the commute duration. No attention to talent pool, lack of any public transportation (this not like taking the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan), … My former coworkers in Pittsburgh took the trolley to office, and I wish I had a similar option or a subway when my car needed new wheel bearing (my 20$ an hour salary wasn’t helpful in finding a quick fix). My Pittsburgh coworkers also were happy to talk about walking outside the Grant st. building to buy amazing lunches. If I wanted to walk outside the Oriskany building to buy lunch I had 2 choices to either drive for a few miles or to see if the Onieda County jail across the street had a cafeteria catering to non-tenants! Teams have a hard time filling any vacancies in Oriskany and it’s inevitable that operations will move to India unless they reopen a Syracuse location and close Oriskany. I resigned 3 weeks ago and my position will likely be filled In Chennai India.

Let’s see… a nice leisurely drive through a beautiful green space or gridlock, cacophony and pollution in NYC. Your perspective is baffling.

I’d ki-l to replace my one hour 4 mile commute to a Pittsburgh through one of two stuffed tunnels, driving over Mount Washington or driving around the mountain. all to pay $4K a year for parking.

Closing the E. Syracuse office was one of the most illogical decisions I've seen made here at BNYM....and theres a list! Why would BNY close an office, in a heavily populated area, and keep the office in the middle of no where open? I'm sure theres a reason. But I cannot come up with one. Oriskany building is very much isolated from anything, including a population of potential employees.
Commuting isnt really the issue...sure a 45 minuet drive isnt exactly exciting, but plenty of people do it or commute longer distance. The problem is BNYM offers zero commuter benefits unless you're in the cities. No toll reembursment, no gas or mileage. Nothing. Add that to the 401K chaos, much lower wages then other major Financial institutions, among other issues here. Management is completely unwilling to talk about it in order to come up with some sort of halfway point.

Closing the E. Syracuse office was a massive blunder in so many ways. Given what I've heard, I wouldnt doubt within the next few years the Oriskany office sits empty. My area closed out Orlando office, opened another office in Pitts then reopened the Orlando office...seems like we might be getting ready to have our team working out of Pitts and Orlando, leaving oriskany....we will see...

I resigned three weeks ago and left the bank because I was required to drive 1 hour each way TWICE a week from Syracuse to the middle of nowhere office in Oriskany. No public transportation available from Syracuse to the middle of nowhere and you must drive your car. If leave the Oriskany building during lunch you must drive 6 or 7 miles to buy a sub or pizza, or you can treat yourself to a nice lunch at the Onieda County jail cafeteria across the street from the Oriskany building if it’s available to the public! This is the situation that MW and his former Oriskany site leaders chose in January 2021 when they closed E Syracuse location and kept the Oriskany site! Mo--ns! Teams have a hard time filling any vacancies in Oriskany and it’s inevitable that operations will move to India unless they reopen a Syracuse location and close Oriskany

I am the original poster of this post with a reply to you: If you’re a resident of Onieda county and feel entitled that a global financial institution has an obligation to keep an office location for you in the middle of NOWHERE (Oriskany), then it’s useless to explain rationality with you. It must be nice for you to drive from Utica, Onieda, Rome, and Boonville (all in rural Onieda County) to the Oriskany office! Nobody from the Syracuse area wants to drive more than a 100 miles a day to the middle of nowhere. Most Syracuse area employees have already left (I voluntarily RESIGNED 3 weeks ago for a better job in Syracuse), or are now Based at Home. Any “plan” is as good and objective as the people involved in making it! If E SYR bldg is really sold by now because it’s still VACANT, why are you sure which location would’ve been a bigger long term savings? Nobody’s applying for any vacancies in Oriskany, which would’ve not been the case in bigger and much more desirable Syracuse area. Closing E Syr was inevitably going to bring about the end of BNYM operations in CNY, and this is what MW and his local biased Oriskany “leaders” (they were recently let go and good riddance to them) should’ve anticipated.

It’s all a global conspiracy to destroy your commute. Yep, we got it now. Can’t believe that these banksters can require you to get to the office.

Clearly selling Syracuse was the better move by the bank. All of the birching is basically whining about millennials commuting to work after being spoiled during COVID WFH.

Hey, can we you send you all commuter participation trophies?

Bs, the person who blundered E Syr closure with biased Onieda County residents or former Oriskany site “leaders” can’t plan a da*n thing! When globe is on the brink of financial crisis and banks are cutting costs after SVB all T&E requests should first be approved by a panel of risk managers to see if work can be done on Teams. No vacations for MW or others on T&E should be allowed

There should always be be onshore staff to back up India if needed. It’s just common sense.

The bank was able to make more money selling the Syr site. Plain and simple. Senior management scoped out each site back in the Charlie days. They devised a site closure plan many years ago.

Local Oriskany “leaders” involved in E SYR closure are no longer employed by the bank, but their corporate executive leader MW is still at BNYM and traveling & vacationing the world on T&E without any shame about saving $ if office closures are about cutting expenses. MW was shamelessly posting recently about his visit or vacation in India. Accountability means terminating MW employment, just like they did with with local “leaders” who reported to him. Save $ by cutting MW salary and T&E!
