Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Anyone familiar with older hybrid work model policies?

Two rumors are circulating post the 3 day in office announcement. Anyone have any details? The first, there was an old policy that stated if your building closed down and the new office was more than 50 miles away you were granted a WFH exception. The second (more likely imo) is that the policy for building consolidation used to state it can’t be more than 37 miles apart, but right before the Syracuse closure the policy changed to 43 since the Oriskany office is 41 miles away.

I don’t understand the complaint..

You had three full years of notice and warning that you would need to commute to Oriskany. That’s a very generous notice and timeline. You can make it into a bad thing but you had three years to find a dream job that checked all of the boxes.

That's hilarious, @4pvu. My team in Syracuse did 90% of the work even though we only made up 20% of our team. They fired us all and replaced us with diverse employees who are slaves to do the needful for the NYC/NJ slackers.

We fully understand the Syracuse & Oriskany story now. Not a whole lot of anything getting done in NYS outside of Manhattan. Milked it far too much for far too long. Time to get to work.

@3tba, you have no idea what the Syracuse office was like before covid. Most worked from home at least 3 days a week and hardly anyone had their own desk.

OMG.

This is now officially the forum for all East Syracuse employees moved to Oriskany as their home office, with only a paltry 3 years notice of a brutal twice a week commute.

Three years warning that Syracuse people would need to commute to Oriskany would be plenty of time to find a job near home. Wouldn’t it?

@2fvd - there’s a bunch of posts on here about Oriskany closing. But you can live in denial if you want lol. I’ve heard about Oriskany closing in 2024/2025 since December. Get over it lol

@2phe - they didn’t change the terms. The terms were that Oriskany is now the home office for East Syracuse people. No matter if it’s 1 day or 5 days. Covid made people too dependent on working from home and now they are complaining about working in office 5 days a week like they always did before Covid. If they signed, they agreed to the commute.

2emq+1lU2O1hd - stop spreading rumors. You heard no such thing about Oriskany closing . Every other locations is going to be the same when it comes to filling reqs because they want their cr-p locations to appear great they’ve deemed “ growth locations”. I think they need to focus on lack of knowledge that’s in them instead of screwing over the ability to fill roles locally

@2kjv, and then they changed the terms of their employment by making them drive to the office.

@1vi yes! I heard Oriskany department will be relocated to White Plains and Lake Mary because Oriskany will be closing

@1lmu - they all signed (electronically) letters agreeing to the ‘new’ home office site of Oriskany back when E Syracuse closed knowing that return to office would likely be happening. If they didn’t want to make the drive they shouldn’t have agreed to the change. All they do is whine about the commute!! What will they do when it returns back to 5 days in office next year?

@1sgd

Most career people move to at least 4 or more employers, often due to issues such as this.. If you’ve been working all of this time and this is your first bump in the road, with four years warning, then you’re actually fairly lucky. Why not make your move and interview on the 3 days when you’re working at home in NYC? Sounds like an ideal plan.

@1vih+1lU2O1hd - where did you get your info from ? At no point did they say they were closing Oriskany. What they’re doing is trying to “grow” the areas they claim are growth locations. So that means Oriskany isn’t the only place being told to hire out of those locations. It’s a d-mb move because they struggle to fill reqs like any other place and we shouldn’t be restricting talent to those locations only and passing up other opportunities from local folks who can easily step into roles just the same if not quicker

@1lmu, try to follow along. They were hired to work in Syracuse but the office was closed down and they want them to drive in to an office 42.2 miles away. Using the IRS mileage rate that would cost them an extra $55.28 per day PLUS tolls.

@OP

Dude, you gotta get over it. it’s called work and if this commute is your greatest problem in life then count yourself as lucky. Why not take the proactive path and search for a job closer to your home or preferred location? You’ve had what, four years to be proactive?

If you’re anywhere near the NYC subway you should have offers and opportunities galore. Nothing will change until you do.

You cannot collect unemployment for that . Give it a rest. You accepted a position knowing damn well where the office was and the fact they’ve said whole time they were going to move people back in office. Does it suck ? absolutely but get a life about it . And upper mgmt needs to get their head out of their azz. India is not a prime location. Those people cannot do the damn work even when it’s black and white. All they care about is saving money and at any expense so they can have fat raises and it’s gonna cost them in the end

Soon no worries about commuting from Syracuse to Oriskany because the Oriskany office will be closed next year. Oriskany vacancies are already being hired in India and other US locations. I resigned recently and a former coworker texted me that my position was filled in Lake Mary. Sad that they closed vibrant E Syracuse site, but it definitely doesn’t make sense to keep an office like Oriskany in the middle of nowhere.

Hybrid work policies have nothing to do with offices closing down.

Communication went out yesterday to corporate treasury team and loan ops today . It starts 4/10 , you pick days but if you don’t do it the communication clearly says you face corrective action

In NYS you could collect unemployment if you lose your job because you refuse to relocate to an office that is an "unreasonable distance" away. Case law has that at a 1.5 hour commute each way. But that would be from your house, not from the current office.
