IBM announces 3 day a week on-site work for F&O

Jim Kavanaugh just threw an announcement that all F&O employees must work from the office 3 days a week starting March 1st which is just a week away. His reasoning made absolutely no sense given the ridiculous amount of work done successfully during the pandemic. Great way to reduce headcount.

I suspect this is due to tax and insurance reasons.
Three days minimum a week @ office with possibility for 5 days a week ==> location =office from the tax authorities point of view, and insurance companies. As well as affecting IBMs obligation to secure an acceptable workplace at the actual IBM office, and not the home office of IBMers.
Which they ofc won't mention to IBM'ers because...oh well, you know, psychopaths

It's IBM, we're all dead. I'm sure they'll vote for us though.

Instead of sitting at home and doing work, I get to spend 1 hour daily burning gas and adding miles to my car. Then I sit at work and have 30 min of daily group time which I had at home though webex, and maybe 15 min of actual work related chat time outside of that I also did with Slack and Webex. Pile on the fact that if you don't plan your meals that's more money down the drain. The 1 hour of drive would be the 1 hour I logged in early from home. You end up getting less productivity and less engagement for 15 minutes of "office culture" and "in-person collaboration". The times I needed to talk to people about work for more time, pre-pandemic, was on Webex because they weren't in my location. Arvind and Kavanaugh are stuck in some old-time mentality that being next to people creates something extra when they know people produced ridiculous amounts of quality work and worked long hours from home quite happily during the pandemic.

Being in the office is nice, you get a lot less work done... office chats, office romances, etc... I am looking forward to it. As long as your commute is not too long, you should go for it.

What are the specifics on this?

Like, for example, what if you live more than 40 miles away from the office?

Details please.

Sigh. What's new? But most importantly - what will change?

Arvind's been pushing for it; Rick Lewis has declared it.

I'm Eng not F&O so can't speak for that group. But came back from a month off in July expecting more folks in? Nope.

In last week expecting more in? Nope (well esp as the free food trucks ended).

So unless they start doing badge reader checks and have a "floor bi--h" - whether or not in your org - not much will change. Austin was very prone to this. Not Raleigh/Durham/POK/...
