Does anyone knows how long exactly the maternity/paternity leave is and if we could split the leave into multiple sessions for example one month in Dec, one month in the coming summer and 1 month in the following Dec.

Depends what country you're in based on compliance with local laws.
e.g. UK gets much more than USA.
The split you propose is laughable.
4 months and you can take it broken up within 1 year of the child’s birth.
Yes 16 week for birth or adoption family leave. It can be split like end of year, then next summer.
