Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Ahana

What is this company (Ok, I know its Presto Db Engine managed service), but what is IBM's strategy to buy it ?
IBM runs a closed proprietary database called Db2.

Does it mean, it will RA people working on Db2, as it shifts to using Presto ?

How many people use Presto ?

Someone said Snowflake is somewhat a copy of NPS.

Options:

  1. Someone decided there a was a checkbox unchecked on the IBM Cloud feature sheet and went out and bought a vaguely related company so they could check that box.
  1. IBM has some other non-db2, non-sql database they want to slap an sql layer on (likely a Snowflake clone)

Wait until May 9th 2023 to know why IBM bought Ahana.

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that Presto by itself does not store data. It is a SQL query engine that connects to a wide variety of data stores...relational databases, cloud storage like AWS S3, local file systems, etc. As applications are developed to work in an interconnected world, tools like Presto work as intermediaries for SQL queries.

Since IBM bought Ahana, it stands to reason that DB2 will be well-supported within the Presto framework. That doesn't mean that IBM or its customers will dump DB2...far from it. It's just another open source project (like Red Hat Linux) that IBM has decided to participate in (with significant financial resources).
