Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Layoffs without subpay

There have been a few posts mentioning this without specifics. Is anyone aware of the bank not offering 2 weeks per year for those laid off? Are there any extenuating circumstances such as failure to return to the office. What about health insurance? Would anyone with some firsthand knowledge please comment on this.

Thanks

I actually feel sorry for Robin. Todd had no layoffs outside of serious terminations for cause, and people simply became spoiled slackers. Robin inherited a spoiled workforce and he really has his work cut out for him.

Funny how @9iad is fine with BK telling professional adults where they must sit but has a problem with them leaving for company that trusts them to get the work done even when they're home.

I bet that you were the pride of your team. Why not start off the the new job with a positive attitude and try to regain your work ethic? Life is not about getting over on people.

Play the system, but have a plan to get out. I was in an office where none of my colleagues were located. I swiped my badge 3 days a week and went home to work, biding my time. I now have a new job, with a significant salary increase(of course) and 100% remote. So glad to leave such a toxic place. Cheers and best of luck to all

@8kcv, the best reason to not force RTO is to prevent chit chatting, networking and gossiping all day.

@OP

Yes. If you’ve been a hard worker with solid deliverables you’re unlikely to be displaced and if you are you’ll definitely going to get the SUB package and thank you for working hard.

If you were among the workers who resisted RTO, played games with returning to office, tried to game the system with fake swipe in strategies, etc you’ll be displaced without a package. You’ll get unemployment but not SUB.

Finally, there are the “Legends in their own minds” who view themselves as super employees despite the fact that they are actually chit chatting, networking and gossiping all day… deflecting all REAL work. These people are going to be truly shocked when they are displaced without a package.

I just love what a great Job Robin is doing so far!

Untrue. Sub pay was never a benefit of working at the bank, although they were kind enough to offer it back in an era when most workers by and large had a real work ethic. It WAS a reason to stick around but it was a good will gesture… but it was never a benefit.

“Any additional information would be appreciated….”

This too will be downvoted just as all truthful statements here are, but the additional information is that you cannot change your fate now. We’ve been through an unprecedented era of “workers” screwing off, gaming the system, refusing to comply with RTO and ever since Robin arrived he has demanded monitoring, RTO and compliance with all Bank policies.

Many have posted here bragging about evasion of work and RTO. They likely all are on the list without a package. Robin has a good read on our problems.

I think that the bank should reward the hard workers when they leave. The Bank should do nothing for those who mail it in and flip the bird to leadership.

Verity twisted logic to sc--w lifetime workers going to retirement and reward slacker employees with hefty SUB awards.

I stuck around for years as an oldster who could still work my tail off. I began to realize that I would never be displaced so I left with nothing but my 401-K and severely decimated Pension plan.

So in my opinion we are worrying about the wrong people. It takes real slacking, visibly bucking management, refusing RTO guidelines, simply not working or outright deception.

All of these people seem to be surprised with no SUB even as productive employees only walk out with their own savings. I like Robin’s approach to try to measure sub to fit the employee. It’s a welcome change.

Sub Pay was never a benefit at the Bank. It was a gracious gesture by the Bank when displacing productive workers and/or long time workers who were slipping. It was never a benefit or a policy.

Reading through this thread it does seem that there is a real effort to distinguish between dedicated workers and willful work dodgers.

2 years partially meets = fired for cause - no package at all.

Honestly this seems to be appropriate with years of warnings. Maybe job search and find something that you love to do. If you do you’ll never work a day in your life.

2 years partially meets = fired for cause - no package at all. Partially meets = 12 week (non SUB) package. Reduction in force = full SUB. That seems to be what they’re going with but who knows…they’ll do whatever they can to save a few almighty dollars.

I know of a couple instances where people were let go recently and only received a few months sub pay. These are people with 15+ years. It's not guaranteed

I can't speak companywide, but in our team (part of HR), it was made clear that those who fail to follow RTO policy would be getting managed out/letgo without subpay.

The posters question, though, is specific to sub pay which is a benefit of working at the bank, and a reason why some of us stick around… Additionally, when you get the sub pay, you also get the current health insurance you have for that period of time as well - so you don’t need cobra right away

So to the ops point. Any additional information would be appreciated….

Health Insurance for displaced employees falls under COBRA. COBRA is not cheap but you will be able to make ends meet with unemployment. It’s far from comfortable but is doable if you’re organized and good with budgeting. After going through this we prioritized a rainy day fund and maintain it to this day. Financial hardship is not “if” but “when.”
