Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

New Poster Question

Please don't beat me up for this, but how does one get time off for medical without going to a doctor. I absolutely need a break for my own mental and physical well being. No, I have not been to a therapist or psychologist, but if that is what is needed please tell me how to do this. Do I call HR\Sedgwick?? Please and Thank you 😊

I just sent my manager an email tonight that said I am taking an unpaid leave of absence for a month. Rest of September and all of October. No reason, just an email. I read that we have to tell our manager and they call Sedgwick. Tomorrow I will call teledoc and see if they can help me. I know my doctor won’t.

There should be info in the employee handbook on flagscape. Most companies I have worked for allow 3 consecutive sick days (flu, stomach ache, migraines, allergies, care for sick kid, etc) and require a doctor’s note after that. Don’t know what the banks policy is.

Doctors note will get you more time off. The dr doesn’t even need to write the reason. Can just say “please excuse name for for x amount of time due to medical reasons.”

Go see a psychiatrist and they can put you on leave. I did it twice when I worked there.

I used a mental health LOA a few years back and had fear retaliation. I was fortunate, didn't experience any and am in a much better place now mentally. Still with the bank too.

start by calling the employee assistance number you can lookup under essential links. tell them what is happening and what you need, then follow their directions.

I had a mental health breakdown 8 years ago and needed to check myself into a local mental health/substance abuse facility. I was not doing well for personal reasons and it tremendously affected my work so much that if I didn't do something to change I would have been fired for the first time in my life - which stressed me out even more.

I made one call to HR after I was checked in the facility and they referred me to Aetna disability. Aetna needed to know basic info about me and where I was. The facility coordinated all paperwork with Aetna for almost 3 month short term disability while i went to daily therapy M-F. The shakeup in my daily schedule and counseling got me back on track again and I'm getting exceed reviews again being able to focus.

*No one, not your manager, HR, etc Is allowed to know the reason you're out. They only receive call/email from Aetna notifying you are out on STD until they approve the return date.

This may not be your situation but may help someone else that needs to know. You'll still get paid but at 60% or 70% depending on your benefits you selected at open enrollment. You'll also have to pay deductibles or copays depending on your mental health benefits. Well worth the cost for me to heal and have new tools to fight future mental battles.

Yes, if approved the pay is at 100% for weeks 2-9. You will need to use sick time and PTO to cover week 1 OR take unpaid leave.

How do people afford to take a leave of absence? It’s not a paid leave, is it?

You notify your manager first, then Sedgwick. You can use the free Teladoc for a counselor and, if they agree that you are struggling, they’ll fill out the paperwork for Sedgwick for your leave of absence.
I have done this as well as 3 other employees that I know of.
I wish you good mental health.

Go on flagscape and search it. You can get some information there. The handbook and the disability site. You will need a doctor. I would search flag scape get the details first, go to the doctor, and then call. Just my opinion I wouldn’t want a record of me trying or them knowing before I am actually doing it.
