Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

It's difficult

I'm an older worker. I've been there over 25 years. The work is just mentally harder for me. I'm not quite at retirement age, but I do wish they would lay me off. I live in fear of getting a BE and being terminated for cause. Humiliating. I try my best, but I get that it may not be good enough. It's just the nature of work life. I'm not mad at anyone. Like so many hard things in life, it's just the way it is.

Delusional… I’d love to hear your boss’s side of the story…

@OP

Have no fear… having a B.E. might get you laid off, but it would not be terminated for cause and you will receive SUB. HR will also help you to get SUB and connect it to your retirement.

Termination for cause is very different. People who do things such as refuse to come into work… i.e., most of the posters here, will be terminated for cause and no package.

I agree. The manager makes the call. I was BE -d despite being an over-achiever because my manager saw me as a threat to his position. It is funny to read his review (I still have a copy) - It is 2 page long with all praises and superlatives and last one liner - more is expected - and a BE. Yes ONE LINE.

I went 2 levels higher contesting and refused to acknowledge and sign. The upper management had to pick one of us. And diversity WON.

Bo-m - next cycle I was shown my way out That BE was the set up. The review was left unacknowledged (signed)

That taught me one lesson though that I am just another mercenary so no more loyalty , no more reward-me-after-seeing-my-work mindset. Now-a-days, I-am-worth-so-much pay me or take a hike. And I am thankful for that lesson (learnt the hard way) and COVID made my value go up and realize my value. In a way, I have to thank the manager who felt threatened and made me realize my market value.

A BE does not truly reflect your worth

If you have a decent manager it would. We'd much rather let someone go who wanted to go willingly. Most times we don't have input but in the event we do, it's best to speak up if you are willing to do that.

Volunteering doesn’t get you laid off. Very, very rarely would that work.

They select people primarily based on who they think they can survive without (and also. If you’re being paid a lot and they don’t feel they’re getting a good value).

If you “wish” they’d lay you off, why not volunteer?

Are you sure you're not quite retirement age? Unless you started here right out of college you're probably pretty darn close. There's lots of misinformation and incorrect blanket statements out there about retirement. You can get your bk pension and make penalty-free withdraws from your BK 401(k) when you're 55 if you quit or are laid off. Financially might be a different case, but age wise you're close, if not eligible.

I was never good at bunting. I was more into swinging away…

It is very easy to rate you BE, some years back I was told : “The Bank expects more” l have heard this phrase only once after more than 20 years of service...In half a year they let me go...

A BE not necessarily results in firing for cause. Most likely being added to the next layoff list.

I feel the same way. Many of us are bunt out. Hate going to work everyday feeling like the shoe is going to drop at any second. Horrible feeling stressed out every day wondering will today be my last??!! It would be a relief if I was laid off. Sad truth

Talk to your manager. If you want a layoff they can make it happen and you’ll be saving someone else’s job.

Don’t sell yourself short. Experienced workers have a lot to offer. It’s more than the techie side, it’s experience. If you are rated a BE and let go, it’s because they have no clue-it’s NOT you!

The managers can always put you into some impossible tasks/volume then write you up at BE.
