Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

So what ever happened to the November layoffs?

They were seriously hyped and widely feared for months.

Was it really only a prank here?

The layoffs did occur, and they were more or less as anticipated.

So heartless. It’s not a small layoff if it’s YOU”.

Far from heartless sweetie, I was once laid off here in a when our division lost money. Before you accuse me take a look at yourself.

Layoffs are inevitable. It’s the longest stretch of ultra low layoffs that I’ve ever seen here. what is amazing is that the longer the low layoff era continues, the greater the paranoia increases.

Guess the long timers who went through the heavy layoff eras grew a thick skin. I was layed off here 3 days after my wife left the workforce for maternity leave, never intending to return. That really lights a fire under you let me tell you.

there will be additional layoffs as senior leaders are only now seeing their 2024 budgets and realize they cant sustain. so they have to cut more people.

Totally agree with your assessment of “The sky is falling” current mentality here.

Nobody who has been here for 20-40 years views these super small layoffs as any big deal. This layoff had so much hype and so little impact. It pretty much stalled out for reasons unknown to any but HR & Leadership.

Take anything from an anonymous board with a grain of salt. There were layoffs but it wasn't a bloodbath like most on here speculated. Only one person left this round from my department.

This place always exaggerates the severity of the very real issues at work here.

Of course you’re being sarcastic but Robin would just love your mass resignation and the savings of no SUB. Better yet, why not try to form a union?

@1rra

There have never been annual layoffs in January, at least not in the last 40 years. Of course there are always displacements for cause and the Bank usually provides SUB.

The layoffs are quarterly in February, May, August & November.

I consider long term to be 35-40 years. 20 years goes in a flash.

Schedule a day where everyone calls in sick, the entire bank. See how they like that

This post infuriates me. Just because it didn’t happen to you or your location doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Just be glad and feel lucky it was somewhere else. Groups where I work have shrunk down so much that just one person laid off from that group might actually be 10-15% of that group. Yes, if you’re looking at the whole company across all locations including both domestic and international locations it might have been an insignificant number. You need to look at the locations where the layoffs occurred and the history of that location to truly understand the situation and not just be ignorant because it didn’t happen to you. Isn’t that the whole purpose of this site? To the one poster who sounds like he’s worked at BNYMellon for 45 years, you should feel very happy it didn’t happen to you. I honestly know of very few people who were actually allowed to hit retirement age. Most were forced to retire or laid off by the time they hit 60 including some in this round. It’s actually sad. I haven’t seen an actual retirement party in over a decade because of this phenomenon. My location had three rounds of layoffs in 2023. One earlier in the year, Sept, and Nov. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many rounds in 1 year. Rumor for our location is no more for the year. In my opinion it seemed like level H down was hardest hit in the last 2 rounds if there was actually anyone left lower than H at my location. Level K in the first round. As far as I know levels lower than H were removed in years past. So obviously we see a pattern which is becoming more alarming.

Nope, the layoff was so hyped and so underwhelming that there were obvious execution problems. HR is definitely not in the layoff groove yet. Laying off people is a actually lot of work.

@nyb

This is delusional. We have never had monthly layoffs in the last 40 years, and the last three years have been particularly marked by unprecedented job security. 2000 to 2008 was 10% per year, every year, no exceptions. Now that was a layoff era.

The November layoff never materialized. It was over as soon as it started. Even with small 1% layoffs there are always tons of posts here. There weren’t.

It's based on year end, but these were forced changes by upper management to comply with the curve.

Plenty of folks laid off. Hearing January is going to be a bloodbath. Names have already been given for January layoffs.

It's not that difficult of a concept to understand. Just because the department you work in didn't have cuts that doesn't mean that there weren't cuts elsewhere. In my department, 10% were let go. That means there can be no cuts in other departments and you still get to the 1% overall cut that was anticipated. So if your department wasn't hit, be grateful for that. But you don't have to minimize the impact that was felt in other departments that were hit. Next time, it could be you.
