Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Being laid off is not the end

After being laid off twice before, I just want to tell everybody who is now in a similar situation that you will be okay. Take a few well deserved weeks to figure out what you want to do. Review your finances to get you some idea of what you need to do. Once you do, I guarantee you you'll land on your feet. If I managed to do it twice, you can do it for sure. You got this!

I agree, you are not being arrogant at all. Your advice on how to live frugally to create your own emergency fund used to be taught in “Home Economics” classes in High School. I learned it myself. Live correctly and you’ll be slammed here. Engineer yourselves into a life of debt, dependency upon government assistance and you join the misery crowd here. Unfortunately the more benefits you give people the less self respect they have and the greater their anger and envy of productive people.

@2vdo, I'm not arrogant, quite the contrary. That's why I lived like a college kid until and was very frugal until I had a nice cushion saved to make it through normal ups and downs. I guarantee @1ijc has wasted money on eating out, paying for cable, splurging on an expensive phone, has a thousand dollars worth of ink etc, etc. Likely their "unfortunate life events" were also predictable although there are certainly some people who get blind sided by events, but that's usually just health related.

@1knf - you are extremely arrogant, hence all the down votes you’re getting. And unemployment in my state maxes out at 11 weeks, and maxes out at about $500/week. That doesn’t go very far, even with SNAP food stamps and cheap internet. SMH. You’re as compassionate as Robin and the EC.

@1ijc, It wouldn't be catastrophic. Along with your SUB pay, you'd get unemployment. You'd also get SNAP. You also get free health insurance with no deductible. You'd also get HEAP to pay most of your energy bills. You'd also get low cost internet service. You'd also get a free cell phone. Etc, etc...
And while I'm sure a few people are in dire situations due to "very unfortunate life events", most get there from extremely poor decisions.

I would get little to no severance and due to some very unfortunate life events wiping out my savings and not having a dual income to fall back on, being laid off would be catastrophic. I’m glad some of you are able to plan vacations and home improvement projects with your ‘time off’. But all of this uncertainty around here has me reassessing things, and making plans. So maybe that’s the one silver lining.

Very nice of you to post this as for some it can be upsetting and disheartening. I’ve seen so many people get jobs quickly and they are so much happier.
Good luck to all.

I have no problem being laid off! At all.

I do, however, have a major problem with being stolen from - and silenced about it.

Don’t sit around. Take this time to complete a home project that you’ll feel good about.

That’s my plan! I’m taking it easy as I have a planned vacation next month. After I get back then I’ll start looking. There is a silver lining to this!
