Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Can you request to be laid off?

Does anyone know if it’s possible to request to be laid off, and how would that impact your chances of receiving Supplemental pay and unemployment?

@8bjq, at least a UOP graduate would recognize the irony in your nit picking post about misspelling nit picking. But you're such a "no" it all...

There’s comments about layoffs due to office closing. is there any news about the Woodland Park New Jersey office? We’re all moving out soon within a month or two. Some of us are going to pershing. others to New York.

It's crazy that a company would be so shortsighted that they'd lay off workers just because they don't have a local office to report to. I remember our CIO before Sakashit saying we would hire the talent where we could find it but apparently common sense is no longer present in upper management.

Oriskany office is closed and all BAH. Eventually all will be laid off. My department is mostly going to be in India. They are already taking over and it is frustrating.

@7gch+1s1zBUsn may I ask what office is closing

From someone who will be laid off eventually due to office closing, we were told they are not getting rid of sub pay. Don't know who started those rumors.

Is this correct? People will be laid off and there will be no package? In essence it will be the same as being fired?

Does it matter anymore since the SUB package is disappearing?

Obviously the best scenario is that you are a long-time employee who is ready to retire. If that is you, then it doesn’t hurt to keep mum on the retirement and ask to be placed on the upcoming lay off list.
This was my exact scenario. I received sub pay (full salary amount) plus unemployment (26 weeks) and continued benefits (for me, 52 weeks because I was a long-time employee). I also (surprisingly) received my bonus (it was paid after I had been laid off) albeit it was approximately half of amount I had received previously year.
Downside to this was if I had not been laid off and continued to work: no chance of promotion and I would assume much smaller bonus (for obvious reasons), and assuming no raise.

Not sure why someone won't answer you honestly. Yes you can ask you boss to lay you off. The issue is that HR doesn't support that nor will they agree to it. So you need to have a good working relationship with your boss. And he/she need to not let on that you asked. I can tell you that I've laid off probably 12 or 13 people over the years, all but 2 'volunteered'. I regularly ask people who are close to retirement if they want to be let go.

You love making up stories. I don’t see anyone in my office fighting against RTO. Yes, we’re annoyed because going in to the office is a huge waste of time especially since 90% of the group was let go and we now deal with people in other countries. My boss isn’t even in the same state as me. It’s more productive for us to stay home. But we’re going in as we are told to do. Only issue is now we feel like BNYM is knit picking every little thing and is causing us huge levels of anxiety. It’s not a good working environment at all. And Boomers like you who think they know everything really need to exit stage right. Why am I still here? Well, I do like the people in my group and the client I work on. If I was forced to switch groups then I’d probably leave.

Sometimes it works. Your manager needs to throw someone overboard so, if you’ve said you’d welcome it, you’ve made it easy for them. After all, it can be hard to look someone in the eye and tell them they are unemployed.

A big however… while the script managers read says layoffs have zero to do with performance, they typically look to offload the weakest employees.

So if your manager tries to put you on the list and you’re known as a strong contributor, it’s unlikely they will get away with it. (Most senior managers will expect certain names on the list.)

Depends a lot of your relationship with your manager. If you’re tight, you have standing to tell them you’re miserable and hope for the best.

Give me a break… I left only a year ago. I know EVERYTHING going on there, and I was there when employees started the massive fight against RTO.

You people are toxic. it’s called work and you’re expected to do your job.

Such a coddled, entitled generation. We need to go all in on offshore because we read what out workers think right here and it’s how not to work.

BNYM needs to move more aggressively against their problem child employees.

Robin Vince is playing the cards that he was dealt, and unfortunately those cards were employees that can only be understood as spoiled children in a permanent hissy fit over a simple requirement to come into work.

Robin needs to jettison the toxic employees ad get the Bank back. If it means 99% off shore it’s still far better than arrogant entailed U.S.A. based employees.

You cannot run a large business with hires that hate the company and avoid any and all work.

Wrong, and in a big way. It has EVERYTHING to do with anti-RTO warriors and their seemingly endless ingenuity when it comes to gaming the system.

Truer words were never spoken… and what a can do attitude. Allow me to guess… boomer?

My prediction: you will start off looking for a new job soon and you’ll find a better one quickly. And the people you left behind will still be whining about being trapped at BNYM.

Congratulations to you!

@1ocq

It has nothing to do with RTO warriors. What we are going through now has been in the works for 8 years at minimum. The RTO policy is just BNYM’s way of speeding up the lay off time they lost from Covid. If you don’t actually work here anymore or have been retired for years, you have no place commenting here. Your ancient experience has no place with our current events.

The employees started this war. Every anti-RTO warrior needs to be terminated with no package. You cannot run a Bank full of bad Apples.

Start again with new employees, and this time make sure to hire workers with an actual work ethic.

As I keep pointing out… the toxic employees started this war with managers with their hissy fit against working. This post is a classic example of the Gimmee gimmeee gimmeeee mindset.

We need to eliminate SUB. Let them work in a job search.

Since I know my whole department in the US will be laid off eventually, I requested to be at the top of the list. I have my reasons for doing that. After being with the bank for 23 years and putting up with the recent cr-p going on I feel I should get what I deserve for sub pay. I already feel used for still being there when the offshore workers are starting to take over. Everybody is having different experiences. If you are one that loves it at the bank and are not in fear of being laid off, good for you. Leave us other people that are being stressed out alone. I will slack off as much as I want.

Sounds like you don’t work at BNYM. It’s honestly the new environment BNYM created. They shifted most levels of work from staff I, II, and supervisor levels overseas, and created a huge headache for those of us that are left. Our whole mentality now is… wonder when it’s my turn to be let go? It’s an awful working environment. And yes sometimes you can request to be laid off. It depends on the goals within that group about whether or not your request will actually happen. My old group did ask for layoff volunteers at one point and those that volunteered got the sub pay as part of volunteering. Makes it easier when they try to shrink things. And honestly was better for employee morale than the surprise layoffs that happen now. At least we were being told what was happening. We used to have a level of trust with the company that is now gone.

@OP+1s1zBUsn

I feel bad for BNYM for employing someone who wants to request a layoff. People like you don’t deserve a job and certainly don’t deserve to be a burden on hardworking taxpayers who subsidize state government and programs. Just man up, or woman up, and resign and find something useful to do. Until then don’t be a slacker and a burden on your hardworking coworkers.
