Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Why is this allowed?

Why is it okay for managers to hire people who are fully unqualified for jobs just because they either had somebody they know recommend them or they have a personal relationship with them? I'm tired of seeing people who have no idea what they're doing being hired over qualified people.

Why is the bank bringing on hundreds of analysts with no experience but paying them 65k a year. You should be pi---d about that one

It isn't allowed. Managers can only hire candidates that they get from HR.

Too funny. I’m no longer here because I joined a better company but as a hiring manager I had an open req to fill. However, they brought in someone from the outside as an MD over my boss and she hired 2 more L’s that were just individual contributors. My open Req got cancelled. Most of the team was a mix of J’s/K’s. Of course now they had to lay off four people that actually did work

Wait until you learn about the contracting agreements the bank has. They are horrible contracts for the company shareholders that provide avg tech talent at egregious margins.

It’s almost as if the contracting agreements are run for the benefit of someone other than the company??

I am surprised at these accusations being raised by professionals. Any new hire takes time to adjust to the new environment and culture (mostly this is the biggest hurdle than knowledge). Some are extremely from similar environment (in business areas) but technology wise they are smart with technology but not with the business and its varying demands. Example like hiring a cloud expert from Health Care industry into Finance Industry.

Obviously that irritates the existing employees for various reasons
1 Lack of appreciation of their experience but the expert is being brought in exactly to break the dont-fix-what-is-not-broken mindset most experienced person have

  1. Added threat to their career growth - more competition
  2. Added insecurity as the new person has prior experience in the technology that the employee had to acquire
  3. May be the newcomer easily gets higher compensation based on market than the employee who is stuck in the no-significant-raise-principle in the bank HR policy

The manager (honest or dishonest or exhibits nepotism) has to bank on this employee also for his/her deliverables. So bringing in the folks he/she 'knows' and who may not challenge but work with him/her to achieve is going to be factor

No manager even in BNY is going to get a person that will end his/her career. But it MUST light some 'fire' under existing employees seats as now there is more hands in the pie called compensation and bonus and career growth.

And it is easy to call the newbies are incompetent, non-qualified and dig their graves by being non-cooperative. Unfortunately that only makes the team miserable and projects the employees in a negative way. The manager has vetted the person and the manager is going to give them the time.

Currently BNY is in a disrupted mode (I see Robin as a disruption agent and P-M is his tool) which means a lot of established employees are under-threat and are being challenged about their cozy position.

Um, I was an external referral from an internal employee, who didn't get hired. My salary, which was in range of the posted amount, was deemed too high. Some cheap internal overworked schmuck got the job instead. So my "in" didn't get a referral fee. At the end of the day, BNY are cheap mofos and will cut any corner to save some coins.

This is 100% accurate! Why are certain employees allowed to refer multiple people and it’s flying under the radar??
These newly hired referrals are being paid more than those in the same role that are performing at a higher level. The referral process needs to be reviewed.
