Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Any positive stories of people who have left WFM and found another job?

I'd be curious to hear anyones experience leaving wfm. I've been with the company a decade, starting as a TM in the NYC stores, moving to a regional position. it's not all peaches and roses at regional, contrary to how I used to think while I was working in the stores - the one positive benefit is the regular schedule (I'm in a non-exempt, hourly position).

I've long flirted with the idea of finding a new job with a different company, as I've become more than frustrated with the extremely vertical, authoritarian, fear-driven culture that permeates the NE region (sadly it sounds like this is a company wide issue).

Anyway, just curious if anyone has any success stories/words of encouragement about leaving WFM (my awareness of the grass is always greener perception has kept me from moving beyond this quagmire)

I transitioned my buying, leadership and guest service skills into healthcare. I now buy surgical supplies for a major hospital chain. Less stress, I'm done every day by three and weekends off. Life is good. The skills you have learned do transfer into the real world.

I left days before the whole layoff mess started. I turned in my notice without having something lined up, but found a new job before my two weeks were up. I had spent 9 years with WFM before I finally had enough and needed something new. I took a big pay cut, but I just needed a job to hold me over until I figure out what I want to do now. Basically this is just a "rebound" job until I figure out what's next for me. I am so much happier now that I'm not working at WFM. I have so much less stress in my life, it's unbelievable! Start putting yourself out there. There is a whole world outside of WFM just waiting. You'll never know unless you try.

I got severance and a week later started getting job offers left, right and center. I enjoy my new job and company and wished I left much earlier especially that I never saw eye to eye with some compromised decision makers. Making less money but very happy and chances of moving up are limitless without sucking someone's dirt balls or joining a golf club. Go with your instincts and you will be very happy and most importantly do some personal development courses.

NE TM, I understand your position. I had worked in marketing since 2007 and saw a LOT of changes. When I started, it was about selling high quality food, supporting the local suppliers, encouraging organic farmers, etc.

I never thought though that working at the regional level would be easy, salaried positions are never easy.

I was initially shocked to be laid off, and saddened, but I understood that it was a business decision. Our problem stemmed from believing that the company cared about us as much as we cared about them. They did care, until they day they didn't.

If your gut is telling you to go, then listen to it. I wasn't planning on staying with WFM much longer than two more years myself. It felt like the Core Values were being gutted. Remember when you started that we had to know our Core Values? My region stopped that in the last few years. The store doesn't have them posted anywhere now. The only Core Value now concerns the Stakeholders.

So yes, to answer your question, I'm relieved to be away from WFM now, away from that culture, from the fear. I didn't take vacations longer than a week, afraid of coming back to a non-existent job. This time, my fears were realized! I'm seeing a lot of possibilities out there now. It is a PLUS to have Whole Foods on your resume! I'll always be grateful for my experiences at WFM, and now I'm looking forward to having a less stressful, more secure, fun job ! Good luck. Dip your toes in the water!

I am starting a new job next week.

I focused heavily on my customer service experience and my leadership skills. They loved my resume and loved everything about me. I tried to channel the skills I learned when Whole Foods was an awesome company to for.

It's a set schedule. M-F, paid holidays.Family owned business that's growing. They do tons of volunteer work in the community as well.

I'm very excited. They have everything that Whole Foods used to have, just less bullshit. Good luck
