Signs of a Failing Company

4 SIGNS THAT YOU ARE WORKING FOR A FAILING COMPANY- BY MARC MILLER

  1. REPETITIVE LAYOFFS RIF, Resource Action, or Redundancy

I have one client who works for a major pharmaceutical company. The building is starting to look like a cemetery—hardly a living being there. When there are more open desks than filled, that is a sure sign that you are working for a failing business. (In the case of WFM, look for far fewer team members in both store and regional, and entire positions being done away with altogether---this has already happened with more cuts/layoffs to come)

How many times have I heard, I made it through the last layoff – I am safe!

No, it is not if you get laid off, but when. This is a sign of a failing company

  1. CIRCLING OF THE WAGONS

This can typically be seen in upper level management, where the old guard circle the wagons and protect their own. One symptom I have been seeing is bright up and coming being pushed out by older, more established men. You might call this the return of the “good old boy” network.

This usually happens before a major layoff. Upper management starts to maneuver themselves into prime positions before they screw everyone else.

This may well be a sign of a failing company!

  1. Generous Pension Buyout Offers/Severance

I’ve had many clients who have been offered lucrative pension buyout offers within the last six months. They are “take it or leave it” offers, with the requirement that they retire. Most of these clients have been at their companies 30+ years, and are not in a position to retire (with children heading off to college, spouse with health issues, other mitigating factors, etc.).

They tell me, “If I can last just five more years…”

But beware—these offers expire quickly and will never be offered again. I tell them, “They want you gone! Figure out how to make it work!” (Lesson here is that if you are fortunate enough that WFM actually offers you money to leave, take it and RUN --many of the top level already have!)

This may well be a sign of a failing company!

4.MANAGEMENT BAD BEHAVIOR

Have you seen bullying behavior? Have your manager’s e-mails become more and more terse?

Do you feel like you are being shouted at in e-mails? These are all signs of stress in the workplace. When a business is failing and in a tailspin, there is more work to be done by the few that are left. Stress levels increase exponentially. This brings out the worst behavior.

This may well be a sign of a failing company!

Does any of this sound familiar? If so, you may be working for a failing company.

It may be time to move on in your career!

Disruptive technologies like ecommerce, and increased competition are wreaking havoc on many long established companies in many industries.

Just start applying at anything that looks interesting. Dress nice. Send thank you emails and notes. Be flexible and talk about all your accomplishments...never say anything negative. Sometimes you gotta take a step backward or sideways to move forward but at least it will be somewhere else...The new energy will be refreshing.

To -1ffo, there is life after Whole Foods. Start networking with people......maybe go back to school or take a course to update your skill set. Meet with a career coach. The most practical suggestion I can make is to go to WFM competitors (Trader Joes, Sprouts, Fresh Market, Publix, etc) ---visit their stores, talk with the people that work there, connect with them on Linked In, and start applying now! Try and meet the store and/or hiring managers and tell them why you'd like to work for their company (omitting the obvious fact that WFM has become unbearable!!)--what you like about them, what your talents/skills are, etc. You have options---just start the ball rolling and go for it! A new and better career awaits you!

Yes. These are but a small sample of the madness going on here. It's june and there are STILL fellow long-time TMs getting fired for stuff no one would have batted an eye at last year. They aren't replacing these people unless it's a critical production job, then they'll hire a PT person to try and make it work. So many people are depressed who stay. But sometimes what are the options if you're older and don't have other experience except wf?
