My work relocations and postponement

I have several teammates that were told that they would need to relocate or severerance out. One specific employee made the decision to relocate but shortly thereafter was told that his relocation was postponed, this happened with another individual in our group. No reason was given add to the postponement. Does any one have insight why all of a sudden a postponement would occur knowing that eventually all my work people need to go back into three office, per the new mandate? My theory is that the postponement on these individuals is due to them going to be severed and/or across the board cuts within the team that these people reside in. Anyone have thoughts on this or on this policy of postponement?

Bottom line, they have no idea one day to the next what the hell they are doing. This is in everything, I mean everything they do. If you haven't noticed, you haven't been paying attention since the date of hire. So, one day they decide, look, we need to solicit input from N number of people of which OP is one. Just one of N. He isn't anything special. Then, they collect the responses, something doesn't add up, they need to refine their plans, because everything needs to align to some bullshit metrics they expected, but really have no idea because they really have no idea to plan for any actual expected response or any 1,2,N standard deviations from what they get back. Yea, they know how to compartmentalize and manage their risk based on their risk appetite. They wouldn't know a risk appetite unless that's defined as their risk of getting a DUI for that Nth pint after absorbing their N-th minus one where N > 6 at the local watering hole. Bottom line is you were ok taking the package but they really didn't know how to handle it whether you picked yes or no. They'll get back to you one way or the other. Thanks for playing along.

Thank you all for the responses and insights, I guess any of these scenarios are plausible, lack of space, complete status change, etc....any further insights or specific direct examples wrote be helpful to all that read these posts.

1) There is no space in Charlotte. They are starting to double up people in cubes. So far only contractors, but I hope they don't start it for others because I cannot hear as it is when I am running calls.

2) some folks are being offered reloc assistance but it is very very rare. In one case in my group we had someone offerred reloc to be in the office every day (he lived 2.5 hours away and came in once a week). He was given his reloc documents and halfway through his move and it was yanked. Not sure how it turned out but I bet a lawyer was involved.

3) it is really really bad business for a company to move people or change their working location knowing that they may be laid off in the near future. It happened bunches with Fleet with people from Boston moved to Charlotte and then laid off 3 months later. A company will halt any changes and put on hold if there is any chance that status may change.

I would be interested if anyone else had this same experience of being told to report back in only to be told to hold off....

I have heard from many folks in Charlotte that there is no space available. Not empty seats.

I guess the point I'm trying to make, is why are they delaying to give him an official date? I mean he wants to sever so give the man his date.......My theory on all of this is more sad, that in fact they are delaying the day is because they will be terminating the whole department.....that is the insight I'm looking for and whether thus makes sense

I am completely lost as to what severing has to do with relocating in this case. He chose to sever INSTEAD of relocate, I don't think they are going to make him come into a physical office ever. They are going to sever him as requested.

As far as last day, they probably just have work that needs to get done and are not sure about a good last day.

Because it's cheaper to keep them at home till they RIF than pay for office space head count.

This other employee was told to relocate to Charlotte, they have plenty of space there....But all of a sudden he was postponed, why?

The employee was told by his boss to make a choice, relocate or sever out, employee chose to sever out...originally was given a 5/31 tentative last day, but that was not firm, emploee was told it was postponed, and to hold off, partly due to space constraints at the employees nearest hub site. But again if the mandate is to return to office or sever. He chose to sever so why nit give an official last day why is employee still not being given that last day officially?

can you clarify what this means: "It's not a space thing.....another employee chose to sever out and said he would not relocate, but was not given his last day, he in effect was postponed on his last day to sever out"

This employee took the package but now is not being let go?

I think it's because the employee called the bluff. they wanted them to take the package and were using mywork as a way to get them to do it. they probably don't have the space or something. Just a guess.

How far were they relocating? Did they have to physically move homes or just commute into the nearby office?
