I think it says quite a lot that Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, a group mainly composed of organic farmers, no longer wants to be part of the Organic Trade Association because of Whole Foods Market's endorsement of the Senate bill that undermines GMO labeling laws. They feel betrayed by Whole Foods, and rightfully so. Whole Foods Market has betrayed everyone -----from organic suppliers/producers to employees, to customers. Whole Foods = Hypocrisy!

Organic Seed Growers withdraw from OTA

The organic farmer-controlled Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) has withdrawn its membership from the Organic Trade Association (OTA) after “a small number” of OTA board members endorsed the Senate bill that would preempt state-based GMO labeling laws such as Vermont’s recently implemented mandate.

The bill, which cleared the Senate last week and is expected to be voted on in the House Thursday, is less restrictive than Vermont’s law, which requires that GMO-containing products be labeled as such.

Industry urges House to vote quickly on GMO labeling standard

“It’s clear that Organic Trade Association has come under the control of a small group of lobbyists controlled by giant-food corporations that also own organic brands,” said Maine organic seed farmer and OSGATA president Jim Gerritsen, in a statement. “In an effort to protect their own bottom lines and those of their parent companies, the reckless actions of these large parent-owned organic companies threaten the survival of organic farmers and the organic community we have all worked so hard for decades to build. The Organic Trade Association can no longer be trusted and it’s clear that organic farmers can no longer condone this dubious trade association’s troubling behavior. Effective immediately, the farmer-run organic seed trade group OSGATA resigns from OTA and we call on other honest organic organizations and companies to do the same.”

The Senate bill would require products containing GMO ingredients to be identified with words, pictures or a QR code that consumers could scan. Smaller manufacturers would be permitted to list a website or phone number that consumers could use to access this information.

Creighton R. Magid, a partner at the Washington-based law firm Dorsey & Whitney explained, “One of the bill’s less publicized features is its definition of 'bioengineered food.' The bill excludes from the definition of 'bioengineered food' animal products that might otherwise be labeled as GMO because the animal was fed genetically engineered feed. It also leaves room for the implementing regulations to define whether certain crops would have to be labeled as bioengineered.”

Whole Foods will become a place with the least amount of GMO ridden food. People will look to Whole Foods for more transparency and they will get just that.

This post apparently struck a real nerve with the WF trolls, at least judging by the vulgar language in some of the replies, which is typical of them. Anyway, notice how Whole Foods has not and cannot deny the FACT in this article that they support the Dark Act 2.0 which is against labeling laws on GMO foods nationwide. Maybe the author was melodramatic in comparing this to a terrorist attack, but then again maybe not. By not giving consumers the right to know and then to choose the foods they eat, millions of people will unknowingly eat GMO foods which have been linked to various cancers, food allergies/sensitivities, digestive disorders, infertility, and even death. This does not even include the environmental impacts. Viewed in this light, it may be an apt description. At any rate, Whole Foods should at least stop pretending to be something they aren't. Stop pretending to be a company that cares about health and the environment.

Regardless of what you may think about Natural News or whoever wrote the article, the point is a valid one. There is ample scientific evidence, not to mention anecdotal, to indicate that we should all be extremely concerned about the effects of genetically modified crops and foods on our health and on the environment. WF should be at the forefront of opposing GM foods. Instead, they sell out! Whole Foods Market's hypocrisy has been exposed. They don't care about the health of their customers or of the environment. they only care about their bottom line. Bunch of sell-outs! That's the point here.

Whole Foods Joins Monsanto Try to Kill GMO Labeling in America

Washington D.C. -- National grassroots organizations expressed their outrage today towards a group of U.S. Senators and major, self-described, “organic companies” that have brokered a backroom legislative deal to kill mandatory GMO labeling of food products across America while stifling first-of-its-kind state legislation in Vermont (slated to go in effect this Friday, July 1st) that would mandate labeling of foods that have been genetically engineered in laboratories.

The companies, including Whole Foods, Smucker’s and Organic Valley, among others, have historically funded major public relations and advertising campaigns to promote themselves as “organic” brands. Now, some national leaders are criticizing these companies for “selling out” the GMO labeling movement, public health and the environment and urging the public to fight back.

“Make no mistake, these self-proclaimed organic companies, including Whole Foods, Smucker’s Stonyfield and Organic Valley have just joined with Monsanto and sold out the ability for parents to know what they are feeding their children,” said Dave Murphy, Executive Director of Food Democracy Now!

Murphy continued, “Monsanto and Whole Foods’ new fake labeling bill would not only preempt Vermont’s bill this week, but all provisions of the bill are OPTIONAL -- the bill’s language is so poorly written that it would actually not include 85% of the current GMOs on the market, including Roundup Ready GMOs owned by Monsanto that are sprayed with the weedkiller glyphosate, which the World Health Organization declared a “probable carcinogen” linked to cancer in lab animals and humans last year.”
