Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Store manager telling me to quit

I requested 6-5 months in advance time off in Christmas to visit my family. I got a YES from my manager, I'm part time. Then I'm being pretty much harassed to QUIT before I leave on vacation by the store manager. But of course they requested me to be there for Thanksgiving. I have been told after my vacation I won't work there anymore. What do you think?

I had dental work done and required many appointments and they sure gave me a hard time. More serious stuff got delayed until after I left and now I am starting to get disability.

Glad you are leaving.

I'm very sorry that they did that to you. It's their mondus operandi, they are scavengers. They are too lucky that the workers haven't done a mass lawsuit. They deserve it!

At my store a coworker was limping for 3 months before she got a knee surgery... No mercy for her! This company is ridiculous

years go i requested some days off for medical treatments 1 extra day a week for a few weeks(not even the busy days) ,that would have been covered under FML/ ADA due to the length of the condition and the type of treatment - Instead I was told to either come to work or step down. I toughed it out coming to work when i couldn't even remember my name or if i had driven to work. I probably should have pushed harder and demanded the time off for my safety as other people routinely had extra days off for fun stuff, when i finally left i had so much pto left almost $9k was taken out in taxes from the last check.

Thank you for the support. It's very sad that after years in the company working really hard and being a loyal worker I'm being treated so poorly.

In the meantime a guy went to jail for beating his girlfriend, 3 weeks locked up, and then he comes back to work without a problem. Another person has a mental breakdown due to stress and gets a month off right away for feeling better.

I requested 5-6 months in advance time off to see my family and they approved me then denied it, and then I'm being forced to leave... hahaha

Of course I'm leaving. This place doesn't represent anything but misery

What positions are being eliminated?

Store manager had a store meeting to let us know that positions will be eliminated due to attrition immediately! Our store opened in May and is already in trouble. Great news for the holidays and I guess this is how they don't have to lay people off again.

Whole Foods, that place where inepts flourish and talented people is not appreciated.

I have seen a lot of people taking time off on blackout periods... your store manager is harassing you. What a coward

All those people speaking about team members being crybabies have no idea. People get time off on blackout periods all the time, you just have to kissing a--, regardless your work performance if you don't kiss a--, you don't get what you want.

This company is PATHETIC, IT'S CORPORATE AS WALMART AND IT'S A LOST CASE. I HAVE SEEN THE WORST CASES OF FAVORITISM, AND YES, THEY MAKE FEEL BAD PEOPLE IF THEY CALL OUT BECAUSE THEY ARE SICK.

Funny thing that I had a FIRE in my house, which destroyed half of my place and when I called them, they didn't tell me I'm sorry, they told me I was in my first warning. Yes!! I'm serious...

All you guys who complain about people wanting to do more than stocking shelves and filling a burrito, remember life is too short and you have RIGHTS, use them! While the main corporate owner says unions are like herpes, you know this is a HOLE OF EXPLOITATION

I found pathetic how leadership in this company makes a part time team member feel like the store will burn or collapse if the team member is not at the store. Guess what? sorry you created a career at whole foods but dont drag people down with you just because you have to be there on holidays s---s for you supervisor, s---s for you atl, s---s for you stl, s---s for you tl.

This is not the only case I see this happening specific to holidays also for students they make them feel guilty because they are taking classes and again sorry you created a career at whole foods but please dont drag a student down, someone who is trying to follow his/her dreams and make a career somewhere else and yes needs the part time job to cover student bills. There was a case in the florida region were a graphic artist had a family emergency he called out and then the stl had the balls to call this guy to make him feel like sh-- because they were no weekly special flyers.

My point is for current team members, dont let some "leader" make you feel like sh-- because you need vacation, because you had to call sick, because you are taking classes. The store will NOT BURN nor collapse without you is just a retail store. Nothing more. You are not saving lives. You are not changing the world you are not creating the next best technology, you are not finding a cure for cancer.

They can pull strings to cover your shifts and if they "cant" then whats their point of having them?

I think a whiner like you (and all of the whiner-sympathist posters on this website) should go find a job somewhere else...you know, somewhere where they give you everything you want like time off during the holidays. Hey, and while you're at it, why don't you ask for a raise since you're such a (part time) team player?

I have seen people getting time off during blackout periods. It's not about grocery retail or whatever, is about double standards and kissing a--, what in Whole Foods is the NORM

not only are you in retail, but you're in grocery retail - the worst, most demanding kind. like the other guy said, get over it.

IF YOUR approval is in workday you can find the date / time and the names of everyone whohastouched a task, if they put in notes you can see those too.

Type your name into the search bar, it will pull up and have a tap that is called worker history ithink, open that up find the date requested off.. all blue links have additional information. I'd open that up and take a screen shot right now

If you don't have permission in writing, you don't have permission. Lesson learned. Also, get out of there. Things aren't going to improve.

Thank you for your advices. The funny thing is that I know at least 5 different coworkers who went to visit their families in other states and countries during blackout period, and they were full time!! Also at least 2 or 3 persons left on sabbatical to travel the world, and it was fine. They know my family live in another continent, and I have worked every single holiday for years. I honestly think it's all about envy. The store manager approaches me when I'm even assisting customers and gives me these satirical comments.

By the way, they are cleaning house. Two guys who were years in the company, fired. Plus all the people who is in the company 15-20 years being treated really poorly. Many are becoming part time because they can't deal with all this bullshit.

More then likely to f--- with you they are going to schedule you the days you requested off.. So here is what you do.. Call off. A nasty case of the " flu" should get you through your vacation.. Since the call off will be for one " illness" it only counts as one abscence. They may be real b--ches and ask for a doc note.. So head over to your doc have him sign a note saying you are fine and you get your vacation AND you get to keep your sh--ty job at whole hell.... Or if you are really smart you will run now ... find a real job with a real company run by actual professionals .

And P.s I can promise you if your stl needed a vacation during "black out" they would take it.

Working for Whole Foods s---s. Do your vacation thing, start looking for a new job, then get fired and collect unemployment. Seriously, this was one of the worst places I've ever worked and glad I'm not there any more.

In the twenty years I worked there at least at my stores, no one was allowed to be off the week prior to either holiday or the 2 days prior to new years. One year a new stil did not enforce this and the results were really bad for the hose of us who worked... But with labor now, it will probably feel about the same as this holiday season. Go on your approved vacation and keep notes of each comment he makes, in case you need them later.
